For any drive over 2 TB you need to use GPT partitioning instead of MBR, but otherwise there is no practical limit.
For storage drive 1 big partition is fine. No point in having to juggle space between two partitions.

Re: Help with a new build, Win 7 Pro, w/1st time use of an S
I'm running a pretty similar build (FX-8120) and only yesterday I replaced the 3,5" HDD with an SSD, mainly for noise reasons, actually. So now I have two Samsung EVOs, one 250GB as system drive and the 500GB as storage for fotos and games. All I can say is, that working in Lightroom got a huge boo...

Re: Help with a new build, Win 7 Pro, w/1st time use of an S
One thing I thought was odd was that when Win7 was installing, it did not ask me to "format" my ssd, as it would normally with a magnetic drive. Is that normal? I'm also using Win7 64 for the 1st time as well, migrating from Win XP Pro. This is normal. When presented with an empty drive, Win7 will ...

Re: Help with a new build, Win 7 Pro, w/1st time use of an S
On the Gigabyte website, there appears to me a AMD SATA AHCI driver, that is not a RAID driver, as near as I can tell. The wording on the site indicates it as a pre install driver, kind of like a RAID driver.... Is this necessary, or do I just change my settings in BIOS, prior to install? It should...

Re: Help with a new build, Win 7 Pro, w/1st time use of an S
Do I format the SSDs just like a magnetic disc drive? The 500 GB drive is where my OS is going to be. I'm going to use the 256 GB drive for my Photoshop/Lightroom program files, maybe a bit of storage. The 3 TB WD drive will be primarily for backup, storage, and program files for less important pro...

Re: Alternative OS for Sony VAIO P-series
Due to the GMA 500 on the VAIO P series Linux is not a good choice. It's not impossible, but the video drivers will be a pain. The proprietary driver has not been updated for recent kernels and the open source ones only have very basic 2D acceleration and no 3D or video decoding. If you go that rout...

. So, it would not seem that there is a clear condition where the newest APU may shine over their older Vishera brothers, even better, in my humble opinion a transition from AM3+ to FM2 should provide an overall improvement close to negligible, if any (again, with reference to an higher powered dis...

Re: MSI A88XM GAMING: Premium FM2+ Motherboard
AFAIK APU and FX don't count "cores" the same way: do they? APU and FX CPUs both count cores the same but incorrect way. They count 1 module as 2 "cores". The A10-7850K has two modules, so it gets counted as 4 cores. The FX-6300 has 3 modules, and gets counted as 6 cores. The exception is the Kabin...

Re: MSI A88XM GAMING: Premium FM2+ Motherboard
At the same time that im intrigued and looking foward to how good will it be, im also a little worried, if its a extremly good overclocker, people could build very cheap setups thinking of popular games that dont require that many cores / threads... like LOL or WOW. This is true, but you can't help...

Re: MSI A88XM GAMING: Premium FM2+ Motherboard
Assuming that is true with the APU only on the MB is it still true with an APU + dedicated graphics card? Yes, it is even more true if you aren't using the GPU part of the APU. The only advantage an AMD APU has over a similarly priced Intel CPU is the GPU part. If you don't use the built in GPU the...

Re: MSI A88XM GAMING: Premium FM2+ Motherboard
Well, I wouldn't call that a "design", a "map", a "feature": rather, either a bug, or sort of a computer implementation of the omnipotence paradox. It's hardly a bug that a app/game attempts to do what is asked of it but runs slowly because the task is demanding. Computer programs should do one of ...

Unfortunately, OC'ing set aside, there isn't almost anything really faster than a Core i7 for regular desktops: so I won't call such a setup as "CPU limited", but in case I'd call such a game a somehow crappy piece of software. It's precisely the definition of CPU limited. It just doesn't use more ...

Re: Motherboard with DVI that that can 2560x1600?
Abula: Dual link DVI is not two DVI ports. It is a single port with all 6 TMDS channels enabled instead of 3. While a single link DVI cable is obvious (it is missing pins) you can't tell as single VS dual link DVI port visually.

Well, but I've also read about people who complain against Core i7 saying it's the limiting factor ... That thread is confirming what CA_Steve is saying. An i7 (or Xeon close equivalent) is only using 30% CPU. That is about 2 1/2 threads worth. The rest of the 5 1/2 threads the i7 could be using is...

Re: MSI A88XM GAMING: Premium FM2+ Motherboard
I currently use a FX-6300 on a am3+ MB, what if any FM2+ CPU equals that in performance? Assuming no overclocking, a few of the A10s have higher clocks than the FX-6300 and would thus be slightly faster at tasks that could not use more than 2 threads effectively. Many games do fall into this area, ...

Re: MSI A88XM GAMING: Premium FM2+ Motherboard
darqsyde: The issue is that you don't need an i5 to match A10-7850K in CPU performance. An i5 would destroy any APU CPU wise. A Pentium G3XXX can be had for around $70 CAD, and will outperform the A10-7850K CPU wise in anything that isn't perfectly multi-threaded, such as most games. That leaves eno...

Re: My energy efficient NAS & general purpose server
Yes, I was thinking the powered USB hub would power the drives, and possibly the Pi itself as well. The issue is not one of power, but of speed and reliability. The USB bus on the Pi is highly broken and cannot even come close to normal USB2 speeds. But presumably a gigabit interface would be most ...

Re: Fainless main PC with 3 screens
The Intel FAQ on triple display actually claims that the only thing that does not work on Haswell is 3 TMDS (DVI or HDMI). So in theory your three monitors will work in a DVI/DVI/VGA, HDMI/HDMI/VGA or DVI/HDMI/VGA configuration as that would only be 2 TMDS. However, I have never tried or seen this w...

Re: Fainless main PC with 3 screens
An i3-4330 is quite a bit faster than a C2D E8400 in raw CPU performance. Passmark for example rates the i3 at ~2.3X the speed of the C2D. It's up to you to decide if that increase is worth it. If your system is running acceptably for your uses then there may be no point in upgrading. In terms of po...

Re: SRT vs SSD as main drive?
It's not exactly the same as RAID 0 in implementation, but has the same issues with data loss. Obviously if your HDD dies* in SRT mode you lose your data. When Maximized mode is on then writes may only be on the SSD for an extended period of time so if it dies you loose data as well. You can probabl...

Re: SRT vs SSD as main drive?
Unless you really cannot afford it, it always makes sense to have separate drives and not use SRT. SRT can get you close to SSD speeds, some of the time, but not always. Also, for the most speed boost you want to use SRT in Maximized mode. This effectively makes your SSD and HD a RAID 0 and if eithe...

I have to question the relevance in the same way everyone else is. The other software you're using may be far more at risk. Windows XP can now be considered mature so even if it is not updated it still may be more secure than a more modern Windows with all of its new bugs. Plus, in terms of softwar...

Re: Build Advice Again - Parental Computers
These specs are nonsense. Ghz doesn't mean much. A mainstream modern CPU with half the GHz would be much faster at most tasks than one of these old P4s.. To expand on what HFat said, if a P4 10 Ghz existed and scaled linearly it would only be equivalent to a ~2.7 GHz single haswell core. A Celeron ...
