not that relevant to backups, just wanted to add that a swapfile on a separate *partition* is a bad idea unless you know what you're doing - worst case, you're reading a bunch of crap from the middle of the disk while paging at the same time, and the drive is spending more time doing full-stroke see...

I don't think there are any cards that fit the pci-e1x slots, nor can I see any being produced, but theoretically you could install any pci-e card in one by modifying the slot to allow the added length of the pci-e connector to fit. erm, that's like saying you can put a Winchester in an s754 mb if ...

as far as i can tell, the MSI neo2 platinum is still basically the only viable s939 AGP mb, kind of amazing. not sure about the -54G, hard to find info/accurate pics, if it's the same aside from wireless it should still be great. can't really comment on whether an xp-120 will fit though, sorry. the ...

hmmm, reminds of some computers we had back in college. they were Macs of some sort, but if you pressed a certain key sequence they would boot as PCs. yeah, OrangePC cards, those were basically NuBus cards with a 386/486 on them. was too young then to know/care much about the specifics (like what e...

simply putting a few mm of foam or something underneath any suspended drive would be a good idea - a fall of just a few inches onto metal or concrete can mean 100G+ on landing. that may or may not also be a good reason in general for suspending drives sideways... not good if they fall regardless, bu...

If you know how or are willing to pay to have it done properly, sure. My house currently keeps an entire room (say 5x15x8 feet) cold this way, all the cold water coming into the house goes through an enormous passive radiator first. Would be kind of hard to use this for PC cooling though, it'd be ne...

another thing to consider is that 15k RPM drives (and most/all 10k rpm drives too, i believe) only use 2.5" platters, so there goes much of the potential gain in sustained read/write speed. even with just a 7200rpm drive, about half of the latency is due to head seeks, rather than waiting for the ri...

I don't mean to be rude, but what is there to research on amd64 systems? Its all simple as pie tbh. Either go with socket 754 or socket 939, and choose a CPU with the same sockettype, and voila. atic.ca is pretty good and their prices are great (never bought anything from them, but i know a few people locally that prefer their kludgy mail-order to local stores), but i suspect they'd look at you funny if you tried to ask them to make something quiet. they don't really seem to carry anything ...

bit different, but just thought I'd add this - in my old house, i guess the previous owners skimped when installing the gas range, and it simply exhausted down into the basement (from the first floor of course). never had any problems with it working like this, though it probably would've been gross...

Your systems will be better off with no tee's. Manifold everything. Think most people know/would agree with that, it just makes setup more of a hassle, and you're screwed if it's not completely bled, or when you eventually need to replace coolant lost to evaporation. Better a tee than a res... Abou...

no, it just means a dust particle big enough to instantly cause a head crash didn't get in there (or it did, but didn't happen to settle in the right place), but it'll still probably die much sooner. i'd try oiling a drive myself, but only to get data off a drive that already died of stiction or so....

hmm, ok then. but i'd think the problems of physically implementing 3D cpus would be even harder to overcome (right now at least) than the individual gates, or even a 2D cpu made of these reversible gates. for an artilect it's no big deal since the cpu is both the means and the end, but if we used a...

yeah, didn't notice that in the original post either, only SiS or nVidia for me. kinda wary of VIA ever since their legal issues with Intel, and all the drivers and patches and crap. shouldn't take any software changes just to make a motherboard work properly unless you're using its onboard sound or...

have the same sort of question as sthayashi (with the difference being that i don't know what i'm talking about); i'm aware that with conventional gates, there's a (very small) constant that represents the minimum energy loss per operation that is physically possible. but, who cares? as the actual c...

um, consumer-grade motherboards cost like $150 max, the margins on them have to be razor-thin even before considering the effort that goes into designing and supporting them (as in bios revisions, the important part). you get what you pay for. :) the great thing about stuff like this is that the onl...

it should almost always work, as long as you buy them at the same time - only problems are normally when the DIMMs are different revisions of the same product (and even then it's not fair to say it won't work). all you're paying for (well, usually it's a bit cheaper to buy paired DIMMs anyways) is h...

same as what chylld said, but also, glycol isn't really optimal; why reduce performance if the coolant will never even be below ambient, let alone below 0C? and polyethylene glycol is beyond safe... not really sure if it will make a difference to stuff trying to grow in there, but PEG is used in pre...
