Re: Low-power NAS build
Celeron J1900 has TDP of 10W, Celeron G1820 53W. That doesn't say anything about how much power they actually use. Intel ranks pretty much all it's dual core CPUs the same. From the G1820 up to the i3-4370. I have an i3-4150 and with prime95 in max power mode it only uses an additional 25W from the...

Re: Low-power NAS build
Are they really that much faster? Yes, they are. A simple passmark puts the fastest Silvermont Celeron J1900 at 1885 and the slowest Haswell Celeron G1820 at 2866. That's not the whole story as the Silvermont has 4 cores and the Haswell only 2. Per core the Haswell chip is 3X as fast. In addition, ...

As an alternative, there is this boards too : Asrock Q1900M Pro3 but I don't know how Atom perform now... This is not Atom, but Celeron, there's also a similar Pentium board. You are incorrect. A J1900 is an Atom based CPU. More specifically, it is a Silvermont architecture Bay Trail Atom that is b...

Re: fulltower / nas & genl purpose
You don't need much CPU power for this. Even a lowly Celeron like a G18X0 will be plenty fast for your stated use case. Linux supports Intel onboard video well so stick with that. Get a MB with all 6 ports available from the chipset as standard SATA ports. You may want to look for a MB with addition...

Re: Cheapest NAS with Plex media server (DLNA)?
Maybe they are talking about native SAS drives only and not SATA -> SAS -> SATA. Yes, that is what I thought you were referring to as well. SATA drives work fine in a SAS backplane. SAS drives are expensive and pointless in a home NAS. SATA (drive) -> SAS (backplane) -> SATA (controller) works fine...

. Unfortunately, it has SAS connectors and my motherboard has SATA only. You can plug SATA into a SAS backplane, but not the other way around. Sure you can. It's called a SFF-8087 reverse breakout cable. Norco even makes one: http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=6&modelno=c-sff8087-4s

Re: Looking for old PC800 RAMBUS motherboard for XEON CPU
Got to go with edh on this one as well. I worked with servers using RAMBUS and then DDR back when they were new. DDR is miles ahead better. RAMBUS may have won a few benchmarks, but real-world it was worse. The first proper DDR Xeon chipset matched the high bandwidth of RAMBUS without the latency pe...

Re: Never trust Micronet broadband routers again :(
The router I mentioned was like 3 or 4 times as expensive as WRT54G The routing engine in a Cisco 7206VXR cost as much as a small car when new but cannot route 1 Gbps despite linking at that speed. I know this because I worked with a couple for several years. As Vicotnik said, you are confusing lin...

Re: Never trust Micronet broadband routers again :(
I will echo Vicotnik in saying it is completely unrealistic for a a router from 2003 in that price range to route 100 mbit. The extremely popular WRT54G came out in Dec 2002 and can barely do 25 mbit without problems. The CPUs used in low end routers back in 2003 simply were not fast enough to do 10...

Thank you for replies and advice Could some SSD-like thing be housed internally but be conNected via USB? No. At least not in any easy way. Using USB connected storage internally is not really feasible. First you would need to find some way of hacking in USB. Even making the assumption that there a...

You didn't mention her use cases..assuming it's just the normal tasks and you aren't going to add "...and it'll be used to edit 4k vdeos while playing poorly ported games".. No 4K, her use cases are pretty light. The only "heavy" thing that she does is keep far too many tabs open, which meant the 2...

While I agree with Pappnaas on the business Lenovo/Dell recommendation, I've been very impressed with the durability of the two ASUS latops I have picked up recently. Those laptops are really too old to do much except retro computing or offline use. I know lots of people do, but I wouldn't use XP on the modern internet as it does not get security updates anymore. With the low RAM and CPU it would be rather slow as well. You could put a Linux distro on them, but t...

I won't claim that my results are scientific, but in the limited tests I have done Pico-PSUs and other DC-DC based power supplies are not more efficient than decent regular power supplies. I have a couple of real Pico-PSUs (an 80 and 150) plus a couple of generic DC-DC boards that came with cases. E...

Re: Can you over-clock RAM with a non K CPU on a Zxx mobo?
Also it seems as if you can over-clock Ivy Bridge non-K by a 4 bins which equates to 4GHz which is a nice bonus on a £75 CPU. :) You won't get 4 GHz on all cores. Yes you can add 4 bins, but only to the existing per-core limits. On your i5-3470 you can only hit 4 GHz with 1 or 2 cores active. With ...

Re: Celeron 1037U vs J1900 for ligthtweight server?
The cores in the 1037U are quite a bit more powerful than the cores in the J1900. Unless your application scales well to 4 cores the 1037U is the faster CPU despite only having 2 cores and a lower clock speed. That being said, for your stated purpose either is overkill. Neither will have any problem...

Re: Minimizing noise from a 5.1 receiver fan.
It hard to tell exactly what you need with that tube in place, but I would suggest you look for two or more smaller heatsinks that would do the job. A few PC chipset heatsinks attached with thermal tape may do the job. You may also want to see if you can put a slightly larger but slower fan in place...

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?
It doesn't matter if you're using the monitor's DVI input or not. As long as you use the video card's HDMI output, the colorspace will be limited if(likely) windows/driver decides you've connected a a TV rather than a PC monitor. Since the monitors are identical it should be easy to notice any chan...

Re: XFX ATI HD5450 - Is DVI-DVI AND HDMI-DVI possible?
I'm not sure why you would think this might not work, nothing in the manual snippet you posted says otherwise. It should be fine. I've done the same with several AMD cards of that vintage and it has never been a problem.

Re: Seeking input on planned router build
My impression is that some reatek NICs simply do not work at all. I'm not concerned about a few % CPU use or maximum NIC throughput (after all, I'm limited by my 10Mbps WAN). But I want the NICs to 'just work' out of the box. Intel's 82571 (found on the dual-port PCIe NICs I'm watching) is on the F...

Re: Seeking input on planned router build
The problems with realtek NICs are way overblown. Yes, they do use more CPU than better cards but for 99% of uses they are just fine. If you were trying to to DPI at full Gbit then high end NICs are needed. At 10 Mbit not so much, your system probably wont even notice the tiny bit of extra CPU. And ...

I would suggest looking at the new consumer level atoms, something like a Gigabyte J1900N is under $100 new and comes with two NICs built in. Another option if you can find one, is the GA-C1037 which is also under $100 new with two NICs and has a dual core Ivy bridge based CPU. Either of those shoul...

What about using the TV's line or headphones out? As I said above, TVs are spotty at supporting audio output from non over the air sources like HDMI. You would have to test this with your TV. Even if your TV supports this, it is unlikely to support all the audio formats that the receiver does. Regu...

Re: Home Cinema / Theater Advice
Unfortunately, most modern HDMI receivers I have seen do not output analog line-out from digital inputs. They will only output analog audio from analog inputs. A quick read of the manual shows this to be the case with the RX-S600. Yamaha's higher end receivers can get around this by using the "zone ...

Your motherboard has both a DVI (which solves you problem) and and HDMI port which could easily be converted to DVI. Re: three DVI monitors, low power?
The simplest solution is to make sure you get Active displayport to DVI converters, not passive ones. Most current video cards only have two TDMS channels so they can only output any two DVI/HDMI signals. A passive converter takes one of those channels, an active one does not. HDMI and DVI are elect...
