Warning about Gigabyte X700

Post by braddk » Fri Dec 03, 2004 9:47 pm

This is just a little warning about the Gigabyte X700 Pro 128MB video card. There seem to be two versions of the card. One is fanless while the other is not.

Unfortunately, I found this out tonight, when in great excitement I opened my box to find... a heatsink fan. Now quite annoyed, I checked Gigabyte's website and sure enough there are two versions of the Gigabyte X700 128. The model numbers are: The problem, obviously other the fact that the model numbers are so similar is that many websites are advertising the fanned version with a picture of the fanless model. Ugh. Time to get an RMA, I guess.

The other difference seems to be that the fanless version is an X700 and the fanned version is an X700 Pro.

Good. Hopefully no one else will make the same mistake I did.

Slight off topic but I can't pass up an opportunity to have a mini rant - Gigabyte's marketing is a bit dodgy. I've one of their Nforce2 boards called Pro2. You'd think that it would be a improvement over the Pro1 but its actually worse, is a 4 layer board rather than 6 and has no vcore adjustment or CPU holes. Damn Gigabaytes marketing!

Wouldnt you rather have the X700 Pro? I mean between the non pro and pro is the chipset different? Pro being higher performance? I think id rather just slap a fanless cooler on it and keep the Pro card if its a faster card.. *shrug* I'm an Nvidia fan so I havent kept up with ATI cards.

Not completely sure but I think the x700 is about to be short-lived. There is an article that deals with the January refresh of chips from ATI and it basically nudges the x700 out of a competitive slot (~ $200 range I think?). I'll post back a link to that article tomorrow, but I have to get to bed right now (3am here now).
