Yes its absolutely true you can turn your Radeon 9500 into a 9700 and Radeon 9800SE into a 9800/9800 Pro! (depending on its original clock speed)

Apparently the 9500 and 9800SE is the same card as its bigger brother but with 4 pipelines disabled and running at 128bits memory bandwidth instead of 256bits (L-shape memory can be re-enabled to run at 256bits).

You can also turn 9800SE AIW --> 9800 AIW.

I have read people almost doubling their 3DMark2001SE scores from ~10,000 to 18,000 from 9800SE --> 9800 Pro.

I have ordered a Radeon 9500 NP with L-shape memory from ebay and hope to give you some feedback soon.

yeah, very old news. I'm been running my 9500 as a 9800Pro for over a year. You can also mod the driver to run the card as a FireGL X/Z. Some people have reported that there's about a 70% chance that the mod will work.
