Passive cooling for 6600GT?

They make noise, too.

Passive cooling for 6600GT?

Post by Filias Cupio » Mon May 22, 2006 4:55 pm

I had a very quiet single fan system, then Oblivion came along and I needed a new graphics card - I got a AGP 6600GT. Now I'm looking to silence it.

I've browsed this forum, and I like the looks of the Aerocool VM-102, but I'm in New Zealand, and I've been unable to find anywhere here or in Australia that sells it. I can locally source the Thermaltake Schooner CL-G0009 (http://www.cbcnz.com, $63) or the Zalmans (ZM50-HP, ZM80A-HP, ZM80C-HP, ZM80D-HP) (http://www.quietpc.com, $30-$45.)

Does anyone have any recommendations between these solutions, or sources for the Aerocool that would ship to NZ?

(I have a ZM80A-HP on my old video card, but I suspect it isn't enough for a 6600GT.)

Update: http://www.quietpc.com says the ZM80 series are incompatable with AGP 6600GT. "The reason for the incompatibility is because the GPU has been rotated 45° in order to incorporate the HSI chip." The Schooner claims compatability with 6600GT, but doesn't make and PCI/AGP distinction. Can anyone supply more information on these issues?

My system: Athlon 64 3000+ Venice + Ninja, Silverstone fanless PSU, Acousticase C6607 case, Samsung 2004C SATA hard-drive, undervolted Nexus 120mm exhaust fan (just below PSU, not far above GPU), Legend AGP 6600GT GPU with nasty small fan.

I believe that the only method of quietening the AGP version of the 6600GT is the Zalman VF700. However, once fitted it does stick out above the card so clearance between it and your case could be an issue.

You may want to ask Tt or search other forums about the Schooner or their other Fanless VGA model (or search here? I think this has been brought up before). I was looking at this very issue a while back and there is a chance you may be able to fit the Tt cooler because it uses a different mounting system than Zalman coolers. The Tt one seems to have a separate metal bracket that fits over the heatsink block, and it also seems to have metal arms that can swing out. It may be able to reach the (far away) holes on either side of the GPU and still keep the block oriented the right way. I don't know how secure this would be though.

I have seen someone "fudge" a Zalman cooler to fit as well, now that I think about it. I think he added on an extra set of arms so that it could reach.

I can mail you some pictures if you like.

Can you see your temperatures on the graphiccard? Then you might want to try to add your ZM80A-HP to it and check if it works or not. Possibly it might need 1 extra fan in the system to keep the temp down but then you'll add a big fan at slow rpm. Or you can buy ZM80D-HP
But if your careful it might be cheaper (and more fun :-P) to modd your present ZM

I have no idea about how much heat the 6600GT put out tho

What about the Arctic NV silencer's?
In combo with a fanmate it's silent and cool.

This one should have to fit your card.

plus it's cheap and the hot air goes out of your pc case
instead that it stays inside.

Oeps, just spotted that you have an AGP version, the above
nv silencer is for PCI-e.
