Passive 650 ti?
Any off the shelf passive Nvidia 650 ti cards?
I see that the latest version of Accelero S1 PLUS now supports 650 ti cards to make them passive but i wondered if there was any retail passive cards.

Re: Passive 650 ti?
As far as I know, there aren't any passive Nvidia 5xx or 6xx gaming cards.
Re: Passive 650 ti?
There is a 640 but it's to underpowered.

Re: Passive 650 ti?
Ok you can have that one as i missed the gaming
One annoying thing about the current Nvidia cards is apparently they are only DX11 even though they are listed as DX11.1 compatible.

Re: Passive 650 ti?
I thought both HD 7xxx and GT(X) 6xx cards were 11.1 compliant...but in order to have 11.1, you needed Windows 8.
Re: Passive 650 ti?
ATI is fully 11.1 compliant but it turns out Nvidia is only part compliant when forced via a game API but alot of the 11.1 functions are missing as it's not native to the card.
There has been a lot of complaints about false advertisements so some sites now have a small disclaimer and some of the manufactures now list the Nvidia cards as Microsoft DirectX 11.1 API (feature level 11_0) to point out they are only DX11 as native.

Re: Passive 650 ti?
my understanding is that the MSI Cyclone II version of the card is relatively quiet at idle. Has anyone had any direct experience using that card and perhaps adjusting fan profiles on msi afterburner?
Re: Passive 650 ti?
"useful" stock passive video cards are rare... you will need to "roll" your own.
the arctic accelero extreme will cool any graphics card...
that is about as close to "passive" as you can get with powerful GPU's...
another method is to use the water cooled cpu coolers with a Dwood bracket to cool the graphics card.
or use the arctic cooling accelero hybrid... (time Consuming install and expensive)
although
I have used the Accelero S1 PLUS with a gtx 650, and in order for Accelero S1 PLUS to work "silently" needs a fan blowing over it at a very slow speed. a 120cm fan such as the noctua nf-s12b works. the problem as mentioned many times on spcr with regards to fan noise is the clicking sound at most fans produce... so just any fan will not do.
the noctua nf-12b does not produce any clicking sounds even when my ear is 1 inch away from the fan.
the nf12b is a 3pin fan, and I belive all graphics cards at and above the 650ti are 4pin... so you will need to connect it to 3pin fan controller which brings up a whole host of issues.
TL;DR
nf12b is a silent fan because it has very low "clicky" sounds at minimum speeds.
the accellero s1plus needs a bit of air flow for it to operate properly with "useful" graphic cards.

Re: Passive 650 ti?
I would highly discourage an AIO or an Accelero Hybrid for quiet use, particularly if you're mostly in idle. While they are quieter on load than most aftermarket coolers (worlds of difference from a reference blower) they are definitely louder at idle.
Re: Passive 650 ti?
Interesting. Sounds fixable with a some fan configuration allowing a lower idle speed.claes wrote:While they are quieter on load than most aftermarket coolers (worlds of difference from a reference blower) they are definitely louder at idle.
Re: Passive 650 ti?
Nah - at idle my fans run less than 500RPM, ~750RPM on load. It's the pumps - they have a tendency to whine and chirp, regardless of what voltage I run them at. This might be different with the latest generation of Asetek coolers though.
Re: Passive 650 ti?
What is with all this crazy talk about low rpm fans , Last thing i owned with a fan was a laptop some years ago.

Re: Passive 650 ti?
why? What if you don't have that fan and just use the passive cooler? Their website said you don't need any fanhaar wrote: although

as it defeats the purpose of a passive cooler if you go back to a fan
and the other thing is, if you were to add back a fan, then you might as well using the original stock fan that c/w the card
