Case temperature
Hi all!
Recently upgraded my hardware, specs are as below:
CPU: Intel Core i3 530, 2.93GHz (base MHZ increased few steps to reach ~ 3 GHZ)
MB: MSI H55-GD65
Memory: Corsair 4GB (2x2048MB) 1333MHz XMS3
Case: Antec P182
PSU: Corsair VX450
GPU: Geforce 7300GS (w/Zalman ZM80D-HP)
HD: Samsung F2 eco green 500 GB
Sys fan : Scythe S-flex 800, @ 400 RPM (Zalman fanmate on sys fan headers is not compatible with this motherboard, the fan does not spin up properly)
CPU cooling: Scythe Katana 3 + Nexus 92 mm fan @900 RPM
Ambient room temp : 22,3 degrees C
Gauging method : IR-based temperature gauge
Running Prime95 for 15-20 minutes renders temps (degrees Celsius) as below :
PSU: 39 C (measuring the air temp rushing out from the back)
Sys fan: 37 C (measuring the air temp rushing out from the back)
Memory: 45 C
CPU Core 0: 52 C
CPU Core 1: 53 C
Southbridge : 45 C
HD: 30 C
Idle temps, ~ 10 minutes:
PSU: 39 C
Sys fan: 33,4 C
Memory: 41 C
CPU Core 0: 29 C
CPU Core 1: 34 C
Southbridge: 45 C
HD: 29 C
Nothing really stands out IMO, I'm pretty satisfied with CPU temps, memory temps, chipset temp etc except for the high temperature inside the case.
15 degrees C rise over ambient, is it something I should remedy? When I opened the case, lukewarm air flowed out which didn't happen with my previous system (see sig)
I could increase the sys fan speed to 600 rpm, but I find it little too noisy.
Note that undervolting is not possible with this mobo, I can only increase the voltage (grrr!) and sys fan speed can be either 100%, 75% or 50%. Fortunately, cpu_fan header works with the Fanmate.

Your temps are fine, lots of headroom.
You can see mine here for a i7-960 @ 4.2 GHz -- those temps are more borderline -- still fine tuning the OC, but I would not expect my temps to go down on air cooling.

I managed to increase the clock to 3.8 ghz and observed that a truecrypt benchmark session (100% load on all cores including virtual cores) for couple of minutes resulted in 62+ degrees Celsius on both cores.
If I increase the cpu-fan speed, ~1200 rpm, I see no drop in temperatures.
Case temperature is - 33 degrees C.
Probably all okay temperatures and if I have more headroom, I could probably keep it at this level at least during fall and winter.

No, I cannot use the integrated graphic chip because I'm running Linux.

There is really no linux support for the integrated i3 graphics core? I find this surprising! I have not done any reading about it, though. What kernel version are you using? Doesn't fancontrol work with your mobo? Are lm-sensors properly configured?

I know that Zalman Fanmate doesn't play well with this board's SYS_FAN header(s) for some reason.
I haven't configured lm-sensors, just running it stock.

I haven't tried it myself, with my bleeding edge 2.6.35.8-1, but last time I checked at Phoronix, they concluded there were some rough edges and they also experienced crashes.andymcca wrote:There is really no linux support for the integrated i3 graphics core? I'm pretty happy with my setup... it also comes with the added benefit of a less hot CPU /chip.
