Help! Intel D975XBX - fan control won't start my fans :(

Post by josephclemente » Thu Oct 26, 2006 7:25 pm

HELP!

I have an Intel D975XBX motherboard with two Nexus 120mm fans (rear and CPU) and one Nexus 92mm fan (front).

The D975XBX has fan speed control but it does not always spin up the rear or front fans after turning the computer on. If I go into the BIOS hardware monitor the fans will start spinning but will reach full speed. Exiting the hardware monitor slows down the fans as expected for fan control.

Do I need higher RPM fans to get this BIOS fan control working? Any recommendations?

I would use Speedfan but I'm using Windows Vista x64 - I can get Speedfan to run if I temporarily disable driver signing enforcement at each bootup. Anyone running Vista x86 + Speedfan on this motherboard? If so, does it work well? I may switch to Vista x86 or wait for better x64 support if this is a good combo.

have you tried fan option in motherboard?
Under "Boot Configuration"
"system fan" -enable/disable
"fan control" off/slow.

Yes, the fans do not start (most of the time) when system fan control is enabled and fan control is set too slow, rather than off.

Check your fan settings in the Intel Desktop Control center. You can change what temperature your fans come on from there. There is also a setting in there to turn your fans off below a certain temperature. One of my fans is a Nexus, so I'm sure they work. My other two fans are JMC PWM fans; they run pretty quiet at slow speed. They are noisy however, at high speed. Mine are running at around 700-800 rpm.

Thanks! That did the trick. Now if I start the computer cold, the fans may not start up immediately but once the temperature reaches my target after a few seconds they will spin.

The CPU fan does not seem to change speed no matter what I do... It stays at 1200 RPM. I assume the BIOS just doesn't want to spin a CPU fan below a certain RPM so my Nexus is run at it's max speed?

The D975XBX cpu fan connector can only control pwm (4 pin) fan. So your nexus runs at full speed all the time.

Unfortunately, my front and rear case fans are still having trouble spinning up when using fan control. I thought my settings in Intel Desktop Control Center fixed everything but I spoke too soon. :(

Try changing fan control from "slow" to "off", i don't really know what this option does but even in "off" at least the CPU fan is temp controlled. Or maybe that setting just affects the case fans.
