H55 / ITX with DUAL lan

Post by Caly » Sun May 23, 2010 11:31 am

Hello
I'm looking for motherboard for a new system.
Requirments are:

1) mini iTX
2) H55 chipset ( /socket 1156)
3) Dual Gbit Lan - (best on Intel CHIP) ,don't expect to see but 100Mb +1Gb would be fine

Adding extra card is not an option.
There are many motherboards that fullfill requirments exept a last one.
Does anybody knows about such produkt ?
Please advice.

I don't think that a such exist, but you can always get a USB-dongle with Gigabit ethernet, if adding a separate card isn't a option.

What is the use of this special setup?

Hi , thanks for tip.
I saw in the past those dongle controllers but they were crappy in performance and stability area.Besides i imagine(correct me if i'm wrong) that addon cards/dongles will
add extra power usage comparing to integrated systems which i like to avoid.
I'm going to use it at home as gateway/serwer (backup via iSCSI ; SSH ) with ability to smooth play of HD 1080p content.
It will run 24/7 so lowpower usage at idle is also important.

Basicly something like DH57JG but with 2xRJ45 would be ok.(H57 ok too)

It doesn't exist yet I'm afraid. I've been looking for a H55 mini-itx board with two nic's for much the same purpose. Think I'm going with the supermicro X7SPA-H, which is of course atom based so rather slower.

For HD playback, atom + ion or atom + broadcom decoder card (mini pci-e) is an alternative. The above board has neither, but then I don't want to run X on a backup/server machine. However, dual gigabit + spare mini pci-e slot should be easier to find on an atom system, if only because the atom has been around for longer.

It's far easier to choose a board if you're willing to use the pci/pci-e slot for a single network port. I want a wireless card there though.

Best of luck, please do report back if you ever find such a thing

I just found something interesting
http://www.bcmimb.com/Products/238/IX57QM#

It's for mobile version of i3/i5/i7 and SODIMM .
I can't find any reviews and not sure if it's in stock yet.
Maybe somebody has more info about this board?

I`m in love, at least until I find out the price.. Nice find anyway.

I don`t think there exists a consumer board that fulfills your requirements. There are possibly other industrial boards like the one above with dual NICs but such are usually very expensive. You mention you don`t want to use an addon card, is that because you plan to use an extra sata/scsi controller? In this case a board with both a pci/pci-e and mini pci-e slot could work. Zotac`s H55 mobo might be a candidate (you could use the bundled wireless as your second NIC) IF the pci-e slot can accept non graphics addon cards. Unfortunately it has rather high power consumption.

Is there a reason why you don`t want to use a modem/router as the gateway?

Hi .
When i started this thread ,i deeply believed that it is rather
my "bad" searching - not lack of a product - a reason why
can't find such board. There are many 2xNICs's boards with other
chipsets (/&atom ), so why not on H55/H57/etc. ?
If i was in hurry , i surely would spend a money on a board
and addon ethernet card (with disadvantages).
You mention you don`t want to use an addon card, is that because you plan to use an extra sata/scsi controller?
It's about taking space in a small miniITX case (bad airflow & fanless cooler might
be problem) comparing to integrated ETH port.Since i know i'm
gonna need it at the beginning it's better to left pci/pci-e slots for eventual future purposes.
Is there a reason why you don`t want to use a modem/router as the gateway?
They are fine and have nice features these days but always limited somehow.
Besides , i don't need extra box(router) when one extra NIC can do the trick (firewall).
I look for a small All-in-One solution as a main modern computer to work
(power enough to play HD without droping frames, to serve
as fast backup (i connect laptop on daily basis),gateway(occasionaly for 2nd lap)
, SSH).
