Power Supply compatible with Asus A8N-SLI Premium?

Post by AMGPilot » Mon Dec 12, 2005 8:46 am

Hey everyone,

I am creating a list of components that I am going to buy to build a new system and I have a question about the power supply compatibility with the Asus A8N-SLI Premium mother board.

I plan on buying an Antec P-150 case and replace the NeoHE Power Supply that comes with it.

I do plan on using an SLI setup eventually so I want to make sure that I have enough power for both cards.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated :)

Thanks!!

Thanks :?

I have looked through all of that information but it doesn't answer my question.

There are a lot of reports of power supplies not being compatible with the Asus A8N-SLI mother board.

I was hoping to hear from people who have that mother board and let me know what power supply they are using.

AFAIK, the A8N-SLI Premium & A8N32-SLI Dlx had issues only with the Antec Neo HE. Most people I know of, are using the Seasonic S12 range and none of them seem to have had any problems thus far. I too am getting the A8N32-SLI Dlx and S12.

Thanks NoizEnvader,

I had read that the NeoHE power supplies were built by Seasonic but, like you said, I haven't read about anyone having any problems with them being incompatible with the A8N-SLI Premium MB.

Thanks again for your reply :D

FWIW, I'm running a A8N-SLI Premium off a Nexus 4090. Has 3700+, SI-120 w/Nexus 120mm, 2GB, 7800GTX 512, 3 x HDs, 2 x optical, TBan. Very stable.

The 7800GTX 512 is pleasantly quiet :)

cheers, martin

of course there are always bad apples, but in general it's possible to say every quality PSU (except the NeoHE, if you can call it quality ATM) is compatible with the A8N-SLI series.

Between the nVidia SLI certification program for PSUs, the recent round-up at Tom's Hardware and the very good reviews here it was pretty easy for me to go with a Seasonic S12... I got a good deal on the 600 so I went for it, but the 500 or 430 (if you're only going to use one vga card) are all great choices also.

All PSUs seem to have the odd bad apple which gets over-reported like crazy through the hardware forums, but the sheer number of Antec PS problems (specificaly with the ASUS SLI premium and my A8N32) reported are hard to ignore. And this from me, a loyal Antec customer (my 2 previous PSUs were Antec.)

That's not to say a given Antec PSU won't work, but the bad reports made me nervous... as do OCZ PSUs.

I'm running an S12-500 with my premium. No problems at all.

X2 3800
7800GT
2 gig ram
2x samsung 250g sata
And of course the premium board.

I'm not running SLI but I suspect the S12-500, whilst total overkill for my current system, would also be more then enough were I to plonk another 7800 GT in.

As a side note, make sure the PSU you choose has enough graphics card power connectors to do SLI.

The S12-500 does but I think the lower power S12's may not depending on the revision.

Thanks Cisco and eztiger2,

One question..... I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the cables on the Seasonic Power Supplies were fairly short.

I may go with the Antec P180 case for my new setup, do you think that the cables will reach?

Thanks again for your replies :D

They do reach. The only iffy one is the Auxiliary 12V 4-pin, but as long as you have the S12 with the fan facing down and you pull the cable through the provided opening, it will reach fine.

My problem was that I pulled all the cables through the hole reserved for the HD cables. I did this so the bottom video card would have enough room for unobstructed air flow with the Zalman VF700 Cu I used to replace the stock 7800 HS. Pulling them through this way I had to get a cable extender--this one:

You could also take just that 1 cable through the proper hole and it will fit. None of the other cables were a problem

As cisco has already mentioned, it will reach but I found the 4 pin cable a bit of a stretch. It did reach ok though.

I bought a short extender cable for it so I could make the cabling a bit tidier so you might want to have a think about that. It shouldn't cost much.

All the other cables had plenty of run on them and I have things in the top most 5.25 bay in the p180.
