M12D vs. Nexus Value

Post by Schlotkins » Mon Aug 31, 2009 3:15 pm

I'm putting together a system and I'm on the last item: PSU. Here are the details:

Antec Solo
Asrock Extreme x58
i7 920
12 GB RAM
Intel G2 160GB
2TB WD drive
Ati 4550
LG Bluray burner
Megatom (sp) heatsink
exhaust fan, Nexus and CPU Nexus

So fan, I hope this is a pretty quiet system. I'm debating between the M12D-850 and the Nexus. Under load, I'm guessing the system will draw close to or over 200 watts. Probably somewhere between 200-250. At idle, it should be less than 150.

So at idle, Nexus is better... when working M12D would be better. Of course when idle, hoepfully it's sleeping. :)

Any thoughts? I'm leaning toward the M12D.

Thanks,
Chris

Since your GPU is modest, I think you will idle at less than 100W. Compare to my signature system.

The lab sample of the Value 430 does not want to allow two systems I've tried with it to go into sleep. Someone else in the forum mentioned this issue with his as well. Be warned. I've sent an inquiry to Nexus about whther this is a general problem or an anomaly.

M12D-850 is a better PSU in every way but it's so overkill, not sure why you're even comparing these two? Just because they are similarly quiet?

I do see an OEM version of the M12D750 for $132 --

Thank you both for the responses. I may be wrong on idle. I have another i7 system that idles over 100watts even with a pretty large undervolt. Maybe it's something with my Asus board or something.

Mike-

You are correct. I'm just trying to get the quietest PSU possible for my setup. I assume the 750 would have the same 14dba and would probably click up fan speed at an earlier (say at 300watts instead of 350ish) but that shouldn't matter for me... ?

That's good information on the Nexus and sleeping, thanks. I guess I should go for this 750. $132 seems like a good price for a better PSU and this is probably as quiet as I can get.

I was waiting for the new Seasonic, but it seems like it's still probably a while from being available.

Thanks,
Chris

Thanks again for the information. I ended up going with the M12D as it will be 4dba lower than my reference point (S12 430) and has plently of power to spare. Plus after dealing with a PC that couldn't sleep properly, I'd rather play safe than sorry with that.
