Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
Hello,
I recently bought a 4TB MyBook and i would like to use the internal HDD in my computer.
This hdd is noisy so i would like to use something like a QuietDrive :
Unfortunatly this case is really hard to find, someone know any good alternative ?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
There is an alternative from the confusingly named 'Grow Up Japan':

Have you identified whether the noise is from vibration or airborne? If it is vibration then you might find elastic suspension to be a better approach.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
I dont know from where but the HDD is all the time noisy, at idle or load.
These boxes are expensive, i found a French seller for the QuietDrive for 50€.
It will be better than nothing.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
You could try taking the disk out of the enclosure and powering it up sitting on a piece of foam. Avoid electrical contact when doing this but it should allow you to see the effects of vibration. If it suddenly becomes very quiet then you've identified the noise as vibration.justice99 wrote:I dont know from where but the HDD is all the time noisy, at idle or load.
Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
I finally bought the Tuniq Sanctum :

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
I have installed a 4TB ST4000DM000 into a Tuniq Sanctum, the temperature is really good, between 30 and 38 degres, really quiet, i'm really happy.
What i can hear is my 2TB WD Green, otherwise everything is fine !

Glad it worked out
Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
Just wondering, how it was without the enclosure? was it too noisy?justice99 wrote:I have installed a 4TB ST4000DM000 into a Tuniq Sanctum, the temperature is really good, between 30 and 38 degres, really quiet, i'm really happy.

Hello, i dont know, i only tried it in a rack, and it was noisy like every hdd in a rack.Abula wrote:Just wondering, how it was without the enclosure? was it too noisy?justice99 wrote:I have installed a 4TB ST4000DM000 into a Tuniq Sanctum, the temperature is really good, between 30 and 38 degres, really quiet, i'm really happy.

Since i find my 2tb noisy, i directly put the 4tb in the enclosure.
Regards.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
I was just wondering about this. My hard drive is annoying me as I write this, and it's not the vibration but the droning sound. Most of the DIY solutions seem to address vibration more than anything but it is a moot point as I'm a bit lazy and ultimately looking for something that I can buy that is "plug and play" and transferable from case case to case.
The Tuniq CR-SAN-BK is no longer available and the only place I can find the Smart Drive is Quietpcusa and it's $90, which I'd actually be willing to pay as it's such a niche product BUT it's the brokerage fees from the States that are the deal breaker.
Shame, seems like this type of product is just not profitable enough to stick around.
Anyone know of anything like the Tuniq or Smart Drive available in Canada? I even checked eBay and only expensive UK results.

What about this model :

If your HDD is really noisy, buy a new one, that kind of product help, but wont do any miracle.
The next step is to put all my HDD into a NAS, and put the NAS outside of my room.

Can that front handle be removed?justice99 wrote:You can buy it for only 15dollars shipped to USA here: http://www.outletpc.com/af7923-cr-san-s ... ooler.html
Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
There are reviews online but Ive been using one for years with a 4TB Seagate (ST4000DM000), and temp are great, 35degres on average, it never hit 40.CA_Steve wrote:What are the HDD temps like in this enclosure?
Fractal R3 case. Very very satisfied, so happy Ive found some again.
Sorry I don't know.quest_for_silence wrote:Can that front handle be removed?justice99 wrote:You can buy it for only 15dollars shipped to USA here: http://www.outletpc.com/af7923-cr-san-s ... ooler.html

I have it in black. The handle is part of the design of the front part.quest_for_silence wrote:Can that front handle be removed?justice99 wrote:You can buy it for only 15dollars shipped to USA here: http://www.outletpc.com/af7923-cr-san-s ... ooler.html

Thank you Tzeb, I appreciate very much your help.
As far as you know, it would be possible to mount it flipped? I mean whether the handle dimensions and the screw mounts let you mount the enclosure with the front part leaning towards the inside of the case, or not.
Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
If it's inconvenient to mount it the wrong way, with the front pointing into the case, it looks like some quick work with a hacksaw would allow it to be mounted further into the case with a 5.25" cover in front.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
Does it decrease engine noise significantly? That's my problem, not seek or vibration noise.
I might try some sort of cardboard enclosure first, if I can find some heatsinks that can stick out and keep the temps ok.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
Yes, this kind of enclosure is efficient at reducing engine noise.
Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
I don't know, i guess it depends on the case. I have it just sitting on foam on the bottom of a p183, with the lower cage removed.quest_for_silence wrote:As far as you know, it would be possible to mount it flipped? The original Scythe QuietDrive was decent against HDD' airborne noise, and that Tuniq seems very close mechanical-wise.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
It reduces HDD noise significantly yes, it's a fact.
It's like day and night.

Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
You guys, i remembered i have a couple of other silencers, that work just as good as the tuniq, and are much shorter.
I'm talking about this, the deepcool icedisk 100.
Took some pics of one next to a tuniq.

In europe they should pe easy to find. Got two of them from a shop for ~7$ each! They were so cheap because the thermal tape was missing, but i've used them without and the temps were fine!

There are no foam?
Re: Alternative to Scythe QuietDrive
There is just a small piece of foam that goes in the front of the drive, to keep it snug. It's the piece on the top right - http://www.deepcool.com/product/dcoolin ... 7b7bd9.jpg
