5400rpm FDB-motor desktop drive?

Post by richard612 » Thu Jul 06, 2006 8:40 am

I've finally outgrown my Maxtor 4R160L0. AFAIK, these 4RxxxL0 Maxtors were the only drives ever made that combine old-school 5400rpm with FDB technology. Idle noise and thermal dissipation are very low.

This drive is operating in the bottom chamber of a P180 with the fan disconnected. A Seasonic S12 is the only source of air movement and the drive does just fine.

Are there any 7200rpm SATA drives that will tolerate so little airflow? I wish the Diamondmax 16 line went beyond 160GB, but it doesn't so I guess it's time to go 7200rpm.

Seek noise does not bother me, I need low idle noise and low thermal dissipation.

Look for the Samsung CE range of drives. The Spinpoint V120 CE is 5400rpm, FDB, low-noise, up to 250GB. Part number is HA250JC.

Wow, hard to find!

Good catch. Too bad it's not SATA but I can live with that. Idle is 7 watts and 2.2 bels -- should be nice.

Now to find a retailer...

I've got three of the 250-gig ones in my server. I got them in Germany but it seems they only have the 200-gig ones for now:

e-bug.de

Their site isn't the easy to purchase from either. Nice drives if you can find them though. Good luck.

I think I'm giving up on the HA250JC. Maybe I'll try to find one if I visit Switzerland later this year. In the meantime, I'll get a mass-market 7200rpm drive and hope for the best.

2.2 idle bels, how I long for thee......
