200GB laptop hard drives?

Post by klankymen » Thu Sep 14, 2006 6:44 am

I'm sorry if I'm stupid, but I can't find such a thing in the internet anywhere, even though I'm sure I read about it months ago... are there any (sATA preferrably) notebook hard drives with more than 160GB?

Dont think they are for sale yet, but they should be soon.

One thing to note, it is a 4200rpm drive, but it is Sata2 with perpindicular recording technology.

These are the two that I know of:

Toshiba

Fujitsu

They've both been on the respective manufacturer's sites for a few months, but neither of them are easy to find on the open market...

Dell offers them as an option on some notebook models. They've had them for a while. Possibly hp as well.... I've only seen them as 4200rpm drives.

I've never seen them sold directly though....

Hi, bumping an old thread. I'm trying to spec a low-power HTPC - see viewtopic.php?t=38642 . For my purposes I'd like as big a capacity as I can get and as quiet as I can get but speed is not so important, so I'm looking at large 2.5" drives. I like the fact that the Toshiba MK2035GSS and Fujitsu MHV2200BT are both 4200rpm, as that should be quieter than 5400rpm, right?

Are there any more 200GB (or larger) 2.5" drives yet? Does anyone know how the Toshiba and Fujitsu rate noise-wise, compared for example to the SPCR-recommended drives like the 160GB Seagate 5400.3?

A standard 3.5" Samsung drive will be very quiet inside a decent case (with suspension of course), and will save you a bit of money as well. If you're looking for the absolute silence (the one you have to stop breathing to notice), then have another look at notebook drives.

I thought I read something about a 300 gb 2.5" drive? Can't seem to find the link.

Either way, high capacity 2.5" drives are an excellent solution if affordable. Suspending 3.5" drives without cooking them is a fine art, and there is still all that extra heat in the case that has to be dissipated.

And boy oh boy have they gotten affordable lateley.

$105 for a 160GB sATA hard-drive?

I think just over a year ago I payed 70 bucks for a 40gig one.

Only thing I'm wondering is... are these drives still as silent as my single platter 40-gig samsung? cause I'm thinking of getting one for my p2p to run on, since my 500gb samsung (yes, samsung, the quietest drive on the market according to Nick and my own experience also) is too loud for me to sleep next to.

Yes they are becoming very affordable, I think new 3.5" drives are increasingly only suitable for pretty hardcore applications.

I've got a 120 gb Samsung drive and can assure you it's nowhere near as quiet as the 40 gb WD Scorpio. Still not bad for what it is, but single-platter is the only way to go for optimum silence. In fact, I'm looking forward to flash drives being readily available.

I think I'll be able to suspend a 2.5" drive easier than a 3.5" drive in the case I'm looking at, a Silverstone LC-04 (see the SPCR review) and I'm also trying to keep temperatures down as much as possible which again 2.5" will win with. Prices on those two 200GB drives aren't too high for me. I think the only downside will be that they will be slower than a 3.5". For my application (HTPC) speed won't matter too much, although boot times might be annoying.
