Ok, MGP got me all fired up on these SSDs after mentioning it in this other post.

Rusty075 says the transfer speed is 110MB/s but most I have seen say they are between 8-16MB/s. Now I know Rusty isnt lying

but Im still trying to find some in the 600MB-1GB range for a project Im working on.

Are there only certain types that run at that speed?
Where can I read more on these? Google usualy comes up with 32MB flash cards.

He was refering to bitmicro E-disks. 110 MB/s is the ATA version, so the transfer rate is limited by the IDE bus. SCSI version is faster:

"boasts random I/O rates of up to 50,000 IOPS, burst read/write rate of up to 320 MB/sec, sustained random read/write rate of up to 230 MB/sec, and capacities of up to 151.6 GB"

So, 3.2GB of solid-state bliss DOES cost an arm and a leg and then some.

110 MB/s sounds like DRAM (actually even lowly SDRAM is way faster than that). 8 to 16 MB/s sounds like flash memory transfer rate (high end CF has transfer rate in that region).

Anyway I agree with MGP. Unless you're just considering a simple device that boots off a CF card, it's too costly to be practical.

So this thing is probably using flash memory and not great for performance (besides heat/noise)?

No, Phil, I was sorta joking and being serious. I mean, if one needs something for work, then one's gotta have it (e.g. if you use it for work and find a way/excuse, heheh, to use a solid-state HD to help make $$$, then go for it! ... Though I don't know of any work/profession that would apply

). I was just trying to provide a name/model of an apparently top-notch solid-state HD that I had heard of.

Well, these guys have one that's much more affordable. 4 GB for only $3,600. What a bargain!

Wonder how much that BitMicro drive costs. Casual googling failed to turn up any prices.

does this have to be an external "drive"? or can you simply use NVRAM? you can get 1GB and smaller battery-backed PCI NVRAM boards from micro memory. i think they have drivers that will make the board look like a physical disk to linux or NT.

I guess its not worth it right now. I got all hyped because I saw a couple of flash drives on ebay for a few bucks. Ill just have to wait.
