looking for a solution *pic*
Limited room with the 8800gtx and HR-03+ underneath pointed up.
I'd put it under the card but i'd prefer not to as with the fan, there will be no room for that air to go anywhere with a sound card under it as well.
So, i need a heatsink that preferably is wider/horizontal that wont get in the way of the hr-03.
Any suggestions?
socket 939 in a p180
nevermind the wires, those will be cleaned up when i get a new heatsink in there.

is that a full sized board?
i would say move the soundcard down to a different PCI slot if possible, and get a PCI blower fan.
now, i don't have one myself, as i've got no money to use for it, but i hear they're ok for graphics cards...
now, this creative issue with the top of the card, i wouldn't say go out and spend a fortune on it, but get a blower fan, or just search it endlessly...if theres a way to take the bracket off and flip it over, you could have the exhaust fan sucking air from the heatsink on that 8800 from above and getting it right out of the case.
another thing you could do is look into 8800GTX complete heatsink/fan things...the big plastic things with the fans that funnel all the air away from the system...that might help too.
unless its a mATX board, i don't see why the sound card should be so close...its just producing heat to add to the card.

You can get additional brackets for Ultra-90 from various shops. Quiet PC has good selection if you're european. For american Sidewinder computer's might be good place to starts searching additoonal brackets if you need.banksd1983 wrote:both suggestions i was actually looking into. can the 120 be rotated? the ultra-90 was perfect but isn't that only compatible with one socket?
For 939 you don't need addtional thingies if I remember correct. For AM2 you only need to buy custom plastic bracket which is around 4$. But with S-clip you can rotate 90 degrees Ultra series, Sl-120 and Sl-128 and HR-01 coolers. Older revisions do not necessarily have S-clip included but newer versions should have.
Looks like a Noctua NH-U12 would fit perfectly in that kind of arrangement. http://www.noctua.at/images/products/fu ... bottom.jpg
Do you think that a pair of slow thin 80mm fans might do as well as that 120mm fan on the vga cooler? That would buy you 10mm. Newegg is selling some new thin 80mm fans with perhaps literally unbelievable specs(silenX).
The ultra-90 is on sale for 15 bucks at svc now. The specs say socket 754,939 and 940. They also sell an s-clip that allows rotation of the ultra 90.
Hmm. I just noticed that is a p180 case so the top fan is blowing out. Assuming the vga fan is blowing up then a ninja or hr-1 might work fanless if either will fit.

i don't know why so many people are talking about the s-clip and rotating an ultra 120 or 90...they would clearly have clearance problems, and even if they didn't, they'd be blocking the cooling fan on the HR03. I say have an ultra 120, arrange the fans so that they're all pushing are toward/through the U-120 upwards to the top exhaust. Unless of course you want to run the video card passive, Madshrimps did, and saw some pretty safe temperatures.
Rather then putting the VGA fan directly on the HR-03 "pancake-style," how about placing it vertically as a case intake fan (either at the case front or under the drive cages) so that it blows across the length of the HR-03 toward the exhaust fan? Here's that arrangement with an Aerocool VM-101 (quite similar to an HR-03) in my Sonata case. That would give you much more room for a variety of CPU coolers.

S-clip would enable using both ways and would extend usage of Thermalrights coolers in AMD system also in future upgrades.ryboto wrote:i don't know why so many people are talking about the s-clip and rotating an ultra 120 or 90...they would clearly have clearance problems, and even if they didn't, they'd be blocking the cooling fan on the HR03.

I know what it does, I have one, but for his situation, it wouldn't be useful, there doesn't appear to be enough room to rotate the cooler towards the rear exhaust. If he upgrades in the future, and he wanted to reuse the cooler on another machine, i'm sure he could purchase an s-clip then, no sense in making excess purchases now if you don't need to.thejamppa wrote: S-clip would enable using both ways and would extend usage of Thermalrights coolers in AMD system also in future upgrades.

Obviously the 120 won't fit going "vertical", and you're right, "horizontal" may have a problem with that rear case fan. However, I was planning on removing that fan, sealing up the grill, and moving that rear fan to the front to be an intake fan.
Air blows in from front of case, and pushed out by the fan on the hr-03 and exhaust fan at the top of the case
