7000A-ALCU vs. SLK-800U
Well, I went to buy the zalman 7000A-ALCU today, and they were out of stock till next week.. so I have two choices
a) wait for the zalman, and upgrade my system next week
b)not wait for the zalman, get a SLK-800U and waste a few hours upgrading that I probably shouldn't with finals next week
found a good deal for a minimally used 800u for $45
the zalman is $62
I have a bunch of panaflo L1A's so I'd put one of those on the 800u if I got that..
This is for a XP1700 @ 2.2ghz on an Asus A7N8X-X
So which would cool better and which would be quieter?

If you have to wait for the 7000A anyhow, get it for $35.99 + S&H here: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.a ... 6835118108
There is probably a better price than that for it on www.pricewatch.com if you don't mind taking a chance with an unknown vendor.

Don't forget to consider the cost/pain of lowering the fan voltage. The Zalman comes with the fanmate, which is certainly more convenient.
You also didn't mention what you use your computer for (or WHAT sort of computer you have). The Zalman within the weight tolerance specified by Intel (not for AMD). The SLK is over by at least 100g.
Dunno which will be cooler or quieter, but I suspect the differences will be negligible.

From Ralf's HS review (a very nice roundup of all the heavy weights) I would wait and go with the Zalman. It performs better than the SLK900...Harry Azol wrote: This is for a XP1700 @ 2.2ghz on an Asus A7N8X-X

Update: Here's the roundup
Since you overclock... 1.4ghz? -> 2.2ghz this is quite a BIG leap. You're probably upping your vcore hence increasing heat. Although the SLK800 will be quieter with 80L1a at low voltages, you will be unlikely to run it that low. The Zalman is quiet enough at min and gives you much greater potential of cooling for future overclocks and cpus.

I'm in Toronto.. it's $54 @ www.canadacomputers.com (62 after tax)prodeous wrote:IF you are in Winnipeg. Try Coreys Computing. But you are not going to save any money. Price cu $67.99 alcu $77.99. So I don't think you'll save much by going local

I mentioned what cpu/motherboard I am using in the original post..sthayashi wrote:You also didn't mention what you use your computer for (or WHAT sort of computer you have). The Zalman within the weight tolerance specified by Intel (not for AMD). The SLK is over by at least 100g.
I use it for mainly surfing/email/tv/movies/etc, and the games when I have time

thanks.. I clicked on almost all the HS roundups, but I wasn't even considering the swiftech so I didn't read that one..ez2remember wrote: From Ralf's HS review (a very nice roundup of all the heavy weights) I would wait and go with the Zalman. It performs better than the SLK900...

I only had to boost the vcore from 1.50v default to 1.55v.. Did a burnin for an hour without problems, however I put it back to the stock speed/voltage since I am using the retail hsf for now..
I think I will wait for the Zalman
on another note, my previously silent single panaflo modded Enermax 350w psu, is now making all kinds of wierd noises after I upgraded my mb/cpu/ram.. yay..

7000A-ALCU vs. SLK-800U
Hi Harry,
A good place I have used in Toronto is Bigfoot Computers. They are in the West end and carry the AlCu listed at C$54.98. Don't go in there with a full wallet and plenty of time to browse though;-).
A question I have for you and any other Asus MB owners is, does your stock Northbridge sink seem to be loose? Mine does.
