5c hdd temp drop w/chinaflo!

Post by chylld » Thu Jun 17, 2004 1:00 am

just received my order for an 80L from one of my favourite retailers.. lo and behold, it wasn't a japanaflo, it was a chinaflo :( firing it up at 12v confirmed it, it was significantly noisier than my japanaflo.

however i did the 7v molex trick and at 7v it's inaudible over the hdd whine (2x 7200.7) so i'm happy :) (as you can see from the subject line)

i've got it suspended using twist-ties in the front 120mm fanhole (which i've cut out) and what makes me even happier is that it has lowered my hdd temps (according to dtemp) by 4-5C - in a BQE!!

heheh.. i now have 3 fans in my system @7v, my psu fan (80mm japanaflo) my case fan (120mm stock bqe antec) and now my hdd fan (80mm chinaflo). who needs 12v!! pah.

Did you wire the 7volt then on its own molex?

How about 5v had you tried that?

That is how mine is set on.

My only difference is that I have the 80L mounted under the bungie strap that suspends my hd in the 51/2 bay drive space. Yours is prolly superior cos you have some space to the hd.

What is your hd temps btw?

yeh i just tricked up the 80L's own molex connector (i ordered it with a 4-pin tail as opposed to the regular 3-pin) to take 7v. 5v imo doesn't push enough air and isn't significantly quieter that 7v.

2x 7200.7 now maxing out at around 34c so far, without the hdd fan they were hitting 41-42. take into account error and ambient differences and that's how i got 5c :)

took a couple of pics :)

obviously from the looks you can tell it's not designed for aesthetics (who looks at the front panel anyway? usually it's covered up by the bezel)

the dodgy fanhole molding is simply some slit garden tubing bought for a few cents per metre.

amazing what a good job a ghetto solution can achieve :)

Heya,

Just curious, what are the temperature readings on both of your drives?
