Quiet 24" monitor
Hello,
I bought a Dell U2410, whenever my brightness is not at 100% the monitor makes a humming electrical noise.
Does anyone know if its normal for all LCD's or should I return mine for a new one.
Also if this is the case can anyone recommend me a silent LED or LCD instead? Also LED should make less noise or am I wrong here?

Try turning down the speaker volume, the amplifier in my HP buzzes when turned up over 40%.Jeroenlol wrote:Hello,

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
My Samsung T220 also has this humming noise.
If I keep the settings at 100% on the monitor itself and lower settings via software instead(ATI Control Center), the humming does not start.
Hope this helps.

Same symptoms and solution for my Dell SP2309W.

Check out this sticky thread - Quiet / Noisy Monitor Survey
Leaving the backlight at 100% and tweaking the display settings in the OS kind of works, but it doesn't give the best picture quality.. Today there are a lot of quiet monitors out there, with or without LED backlight. I can recommend the Dell U2311 for example.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
I recently got a HP ZR24w that is silent even with brightness set to 5. ( I do photo editing and use calibration HW & SW.) I'm not sure what the point is in using a high accuracy monitor and then setting brightness to 100.
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
I have two HP ZR24w's, both are silent at the brightnesses I'm using (~15%, ~70%).
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Well if the second dell U2410 makes the same buzzing when low brightness im going to get the ZR24W.
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
It just seems its a lottery to get a silent one. Many people report there U2410 is silent etc.
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
@ the guys with the ZR24W, are you sure there is no noise diffrence when ur using diffrent brightness (common problem with lcd's).
Because if its the case I might just return the dell for the HP.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
I had a Dell 2405FPW before that buzzed like crazy, that was the main reason I got rid of it. Dell U2711 and U2311 are silent though, despite having CCFL backlight just like the 2405FPW. I think that many manufacturers have chosen better components for controlling the backlight just in recent years. I don't think that there's a lot of variance between individual monitors of the same model, but that's just the feeling I'm getting. I think rather that the reason for different reports regarding buzzing is due to some people being more bothered by the sound than others. I'm very sensitive for example.
Don't dismiss the Dells because they are Dells I mean. If you like the Dell design like I do, please give the U2311 a look, it's one hell of a monitor. Not that expensive, IPS panel and quiet at any brightness setting. The HPs aren't bad either I'm sure.
Shame that 16:10 panels with 1920x1200 are so uncommon today. You might miss that going from a buzzing U2410 to a more recent monitor.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
There's no noise either way as far as I can tell. I can hear the difference in several LCDs, so I'm quite confident that ZR24w is better than average noise-wise.Jeroenlol wrote:@ the guys with the ZR24W, are you sure there is no noise diffrence when ur using diffrent brightness (common problem with lcd's).

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Yeah, but specs says power consumption <85W typical. I'm a bit obsessed with low power consumption and the U2311 is 33W typical.mellon wrote:ZR24w has a 1920x1200 panel.
Getting a bit off topic here, sorry..
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Well the U2311 looks tempting if my other u2410 has another buzzing problem. I just don't understand that the 23" would have no buzzing and all the 24" would have:p
Maybi like you said if the U2311 is a newer model then the U2410 then it might be indeed better made.. the only thing I would miss would be the resolution but I could live with that for a non buzzing monitor
I could just get 2x U2311 instead or get 1x 27"

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
well I got another U2410 and its the same buzzing when I get at brightness 75/50 it starts to buzz and at 100 nothing.
I am really thinking if I should swap it for the HP ZR24W OR Dell U2311 but I think this one will have it to...
If these are silent I might go for the dell and give up my 24"

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Is the buzzing from the power supply?
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Hmm I don't know it comes from the backlight I think im not sure.
The buzzing only happens with low brightness , on the top right rear. The powersupply is far below that but also on the right side.
Well if anyone can recommend me a silent monitor be my guest, will use it for photoshop , web browsing, movies, online poker, gaming.
So far people recommended me : U2311 and ZR24W, I will pick one of those and hope they dont have that buzzing problem.

When you're at the store, mess with the display model's settings and put your ear against the screen to listen for buzzing.Jeroenlol wrote:Hmm I don't know it comes from the backlight I think im not sure.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Theres no stores here with the Dells or the ZR24W
@Victonik , I might take ur advice and go for a U2311 ... 2 people say the ZR24W is silent (@ those guys did you test it in a silent room? ) and another guy says on the forum it was noisy to so im really doubting now as it was my first choice after the U2410
Though im still trying to find a reason with the U2410 makes such a buzzing noise and the U2311 doesn't, is the 23" a newer model? newer internals?

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
I think so. U2410 is a 2010 model and U2311 is a 2011 model. The power consumption figures (75W vs 33W typical) also seems to suggest that they have done some "upgrades" to the internals. It seems probable that lower power consumption and lower noise both could be due to better quality components. I don't think it's disputed that it is indeed possible to build a quiet inverter/dimmer, but that it would require better quality components. Now green is the buzzword of the day and low power consumption is a selling point. Quality components might also be cheaper now.
But I'm just guessing here. I have only had experience with one U2711 and one U2311, but both of them were quiet. And I am sensitive to noise so I think most people would agree that at least those monitors I've tested are quiet.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Don't know what to do anymore
On another forum I read this:
Just wanted to add that my U2311 does indeed emit noise from the psu. It's like a howling noise. I have a somewhat noisy pc so didn't detect it until now. But once you detected it. You hear it all the time. I'm happy I didn't buy one of the bigger models.
I mean its a lottery or what?
Is it me or does alot less people seem to have the problem with LED monitors?

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
So I just got a mail I have the option to return the monitor for this:
1x U2711 (have to pay some more ofcourse)
1x HP ZR24W
2x U2311
All I want is no noise problems with the backlight, what you guys think I should go for?
From all ive been reading LED screens really have alot less of problems with the noise, probably because of diffrent inverter? I might try to get some 24" dell led's

I don't envy you. Let us know how it goes.
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Will let you know I will get a 3th replacement from Dell this week I hope Still working on my SB PC anyway so theres no hurry
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
The noise comes from the power supply, its the same noise big room lamps make when you dimm the light. It typically goes away at 100%, unfortunatly 100% uses 3 times the power as 0%. A good bet is to look out for monitors with external PSUs, so you can at least put the PSU in a dark place where no one can hear it scream...
Re: Quiet 24" monitor
It seems like the problem isnt there on the Dell U2711 but is on alot of the U2410 models, I will be upgrading to a U2711 and will report back if the model I get has the same problems with power supply noise when dimming the brightness.
Btw I got to test 2 HP ZR24W models and both had the same brightness dimming noise.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Received 3th unit for dell (u2410), almost scared to open it! Rev A05.
And guess what same buzzing noise if brightness not at 100%

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
Maybe my PC isn't quiet enough to notice it but my monitor is set to 42% brightness just because it's the "Answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything". I really couldn't tell much difference in brightness though 100% seemed just barely too bright for nighttime use.
It's nothing special just a Acer 1916W with a silver bezel (they made a black and a silver version, the black was analog only, the silver added DVI). I bought it several years ago and back then it was one of the cheapest 19" widescreen LCDs made. 1440x900 unlike the newer 1366x768 they're trying to push on 19" displays.
I've been looking forward to getting a 24-28" widescreen and I hope I won't notice any buzz from changing the brightness.

Re: Quiet 24" monitor
The buzzing in my U2410's are really annoying, when im at the computer in the evening its really really annoying.
I might try the U2711.. alot of the people say it doesnt make the buzzing probably because of better quality components.
So far the people that replied that there U2410 isnt making buzzing noise had an earlier revision of the monitor (mine is A05)
