55C idle with Mugen 3 and Intel i7-4770K
So I just upgraded from an i5-2500K to the i7-4770K, and my normal idle temps with a Scythe Mugen 3 (and Arctic Silver 5) are about 55C according to the BIOS, which seems way too high. The motherboard is an Asrock Z87 Pro3. I'm not sure if I messed up with the artic silver application (I've done it a million times, but the Mugen is a b***h to bolt on while trying to keep it still), or if this is just to be expected from Haswell? Or maybe the mobo readings are not to be trusted?

Give it a few days, AS can get better after a "burn in".
If it doesn't improve, try applying again. If that doesn't get it down in the 40s, either your IHS TIM is bad or your sensor is way off.

Okay, I'm seeing 46C now at idle, measured with RealTemp. I've never known AS5 to improve that much, that quickly due to burn-in, but my knowledge is admittedly a bit out of date. Is 46C idle to be expected of these chips, do you think?
Edit: While RealTemp is showing temperature at 46C, it shows "distance to TJ max" as 55C. Further, the numbers seem to fluctuate +/- 2 degrees pretty rapidly. Maybe that's an indication of a bad heatsink contact?

Okay, so running prime95 caused it to shoot up to 100C almost instantly. So now I'm pretty sure its the heatsink contact.

You didn't tell us how you obtain the temps.
If the temps were at 100° C, you should either observe throtteling or shutdowns. If you do not have any throtteling, then your temp readings may be way off.

Sorry, I didn't know to provide this info. Yes, I did observe throttling down to about 2.5ghz (my guess is that it somehow was able to dissipate enough heat once it throttled that much that it didn't need a heatsink anyway).Pappnaas wrote:You didn't tell us how you obtain the temps.

I just finished re-seating the cooler and my temps are down to around 33C idle, which is in line with my old i5-2500k. Running prime95 with small FFTs, it averages around 60-65C.
Upon closer inspection, it looks like I didn't have the cooler screwed in properly, because one of the mounting holes on my Asrock Z87 Pro3 motherboard was off by almost 3mm. I had to drill out the backplate for the Mugen to get it to fit.
I have half a mind to send the motherboard back to Asrock, but its working now anyway. Aren't they supposed to follow strict specifications from Intel for those mounting holes?
