Re: Power Lost - A Better Way to Compare PSU Efficiency

If only I could find somewhere to buy a lazer platinum in the UK I'd have looked at one already. Are Kingwin not selling in Europe (or at least not the UK)? As it is I guess I'm sticking with my ageing HX520. Given how long i've had it, I'm impressed it's still regarded relatively well.

HuntKey Jumper / R90

I'd be interested in a review of the HuntKey Jumper / R90 (as reviewed on Anandtech in May 2011) as its an 80+ gold PSU for only £40 which is a lot less than most other highly efficient PSUs. It's "only" 300W - which makes it ideal for lower powered PCs. The anandtech review is pretty reasonable but...

Re: AMD Fusion APUs Arrive

from the anandtech performance preview: In most of our benchmarks the performance advantage over Atom isn't huge, yet using Brazos is much better than using an Atom based machine. It all boils down to one thing: single threaded performance. Atom can make up for its deficiencies by executing a lot o...

Re: AMD Fusion APUs Arrive

So there's a number of things which make these new AMD chips more interesting regardless of their raw performance. But if all you want is to multi-threaded number-crunching or to play videos (but only to your device's integrated display or VGA), an Atom will do the job for a good bit less money. I'...

Re: AMD Fusion APUs Arrive

mmm... i'd prefer a mini-itx, i've always wanted one :) i just hope general usage is fast and responsive, my atom powered netbook can be frustrating at times. mini-ITX would be ideal for a system mounted on the back of the monitor, but as I have a rack full of amps for my home-cinema and would like...

Re: AMD Fusion APUs Arrive

Shame miniITX only supports 1 expansion slot. Anyone know if there are any microATX fusion boards on their way anytime soon? i.e. the equivalent of these miniITX boards (with CPU included) but in microATX size Yess. Asus has one coming -- fanless. There will be others. fantastic, cheers Mike. i alr...

Re: Reducing power consumption thru cooling?

OK, we've got a range of interesting opinions, but still no hard numbers being offered... Take a look at the System Measurements chart for the SFF Gaming System Lawrence built. See how the power usage changes with airflow/temps? Regarding VRM heatsinks: I think it's a your-mileage-may-vary situatio...

Re: Reducing power consumption thru cooling?

OK, we've got a range of interesting opinions, but still no hard numbers being offered... on the heatsink testing methodology it says that power consumption is measured (to give an idea of efficiency of VRMs) but I don't see any numbers on any of the reviews! Which is a shame. Even if it turns out t...

Re: Reducing power consumption thru cooling?

I`m not sure if higher resistance would translate into lower power draw in practice, the power supply feeding the cpu would make sure it gets those 5/50/whatever amps the cpu needs. Higher resistance would result in higher power draw because of energy loss and also because the on board power supply...

Reducing power consumption thru cooling?

The following thought/question occurred to me earlier, and I haven't been able to find an adequate answer. It's the sort of thing I'd expect to find on SPCR, so I wondered if anyone has any thoughts... a simple physics experiment shows that increasing the temperature of a wire increases resistance, ...

ATX alternative to Antec NSK2480 for HTPC

Hi folks, Am after opinions on a case for a HTPC. I really like the look of the slim desktop type HTPC cases (e.g. the Lian-Li PC-C39, CoolerMaster Media 260, Antek NSK2480, Silverstone Milo series and LC11). The problem with most of these cases however is that they're too slim for full-height expan...

Cheers for the detailed reply! I'm definatley going to have a go at the CPU duct. Not sure yet about PSU - if i play some games and the case warms up then the PSU fans increase a bit, and then it bugs me after i stop playing while it cools down again, so i may do a PSU duct too. I've got the system ...

6. The Enermax fan controller is already irritating - it goes into "warning" mode when the fans are at less than 1000rpm, it doesn't give a voltage boost at power-up to make sure they start, and it prevents accurate rpm readings being passed to the motherboard, and hence i get a bios warning at powe...

I've got 3 120mm Nexus fans - and at 600-700rpm the only noise you can hear is the sound of the air moving if you put your ear within a few inches of them. Amazingly quiet. Worth every penny of the UK£12 i paid for each of them

Ambitious! Sounds like an excellent project though. I assume you mean you would epoxy the heatpipe onto some kind of copper block that would be mounted on the northbridge using the normal mounting holes, rather than epoxying anything onto the NB itself?! Direct epoxy onto the NB would leave the mod ...

Is the NEC 3520 any quieter than the 3500? My DVR-A08 still hasn't come, and the A09 is due out in Europe at the end of January, but the 3520 is available now, and much cheaper (Kelkoo works). I got it from Ebuyer in the UK. Currently £43.47 for the black version. Plenty (610) in stock at the moment. I would have thought other places would have it too.
