Looks like WD already did a silent update of the GreenPower 1TB to 334gb/platter.

Worth keeping an eye on, at any rate.

My p182 isn't the quietest out, but seems to handle an o/c q6600 and 8800gts ok, running at 100% (just cpu) all the time. No extra fans, just the two tri-cools on low and an undervolted nexus on the ninja cpu cooler. I'll probably swap out the tri-cools at some point, they're a bit noisy for my liki...

You can but try. The e6750 isn't particularly high powered, but I'm not sure how it would go 100% load all the time. I'd be inclined to try ducting from at least the ninja to the exhaust fan (many examples around here in the articles/fora). However, you may as well try as-is first, if it works, why ...

Who said sanity had to come into CPU purchases? : ) I'm going the quad, can't wait... I read somewhere though there's already 500k backorders on g0 cpus, don't know if that's all quads though. The Xeon Penryns look great, especially the TDP. I don't know why people are compaining about the 120W revi...

I would go with the Thermalright Ultra 120 or 120 Extreme over the Ninja to cool your CPU. Horses for courses. The ninja will do a good job, the TR u-120ex the best, but there'll only be at best a few degrees in it. As far as the Quad Core goes, what I really don't like about it is that they are cu...

Why 3gb of RAM? Why not just get 4x1gb dimms, or better yet, 2x2gb? If budget is a concern, get 2gb now, 2gb later. You're running Vista64 I hope? You also don't need ddr2/800 unless you are going to overclock; even ddr2/667 will take you to 3.0ghz without o/c the ram, but the g0 q6600s are said to ...

Petrol has just hit A$1.40 here in Australia, which is high by our standards. Interestingly, public transport rockets every time there is a fuel price surge, then settles once people get used to the new price. The other strong correlation with fuel price is housing price; every time the price jumps,...

Some reasons why CFLs sometimes appear dimmer than incandescent are outlined in this pdf: http://web.aanet.com.au/aanet/SDOC0857.pdf It's a reproduction from ReNew, an Australian sustainability magazine I subscribe to; basically, the average CFL is often placed in a light fitting not designed for th...

As I can think of legitimate uses for incandescents, but agree that in general, CFLs should be used, I'm more against, than for, the ban on incandescents that we in Australia are also soon to experience. I'd rather see a 10% hike/tax or whatever in electricity prices to further expansion of more gen...

Anandtech recommend SPCR for acoustic tests
Just thought I'd highlight that Anandtech recommend SPCR as the place to go for acoustic testing of hard drives... http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2969 We recommend a visit to SPCR if you are interested in pure acoustic test results of the drives without other system components being...

I recently set up a e4300 with p5l-vm. The p5l-vm onboard gigabit doesn't work out of the box with the current Ubuntu 6.10, but will with the next (Feisty, due in ~3 weeks). This is because the driver wasn't incorporated into the linux kernel until recently. Otherwise everything else works fine, inc...

Seagates have been lagging behind others in noise for couple years. Which I have just recently discovered to my chagrin. I did a similar thing to cool some VRMs or MOSFETs or whatever they are called (other than hot!) on one of my motherboards... just sawed off an appropriately sized piece of some other chipset heatsink. I didn't worry about lapping, I was attaching with thermal tape anyhow. That was one nice job ther...

Scythe Samurai Z? It's reviewed here at SPCR. I grabbed one for a height-limited setup, and it's a bit loud at 12v but you don't have to drop the voltage too much before it's acceptably quiet. Cooling is fine on an e4300 at stock, and decent when o/c. It's not in the same class as infinity/ninja, mo...

Anyone know of some actual C2D power consumption numbers?
I found some here:
http://www.lostcircuits.com/cpu/intel_core2/7.shtml

but I was looking for e4300.
(not TDP, actual consumption...)
Thanks...

I'm using the scythe katana in a 140mm high HTPC. It's a bit loud at stock speed, but OK when turned down a bit. It's still a relatively tight fit, but not ridiculously cramped. You could always swap the fan, but I found it provided acceptable noise/cooling as is. It's not super expensive either. 10...

I'm sure you'll find something commercially, but if you're like a lot of us and have spares boxes, there's usually something that can be put to good use : )
BTW, 40C is fine, 50 is pushing it, but most drives are rated to 55C at least.
