some good points, SO happy that this didnt turn into a shooting match.......(yet ! ) yeah, Ive had HD failures in the past, in fact, I would say they all pretty much lose their attributes after 2-3 years.......bearings wear out, etc etc Id like to keep them cooler, but that would require a fan, and ...

Yes, then why dont all you guys perform measured tests, with dB meters.... after all , you say 'silent' is only a percieved term, so clearly, no one can judge anybody elses statements..... of course, you could be incorrect, and silent, does actually mean silent, as in , inaudible.... besides, does i...

yup...........exact problems I had with BOTH my Sata 7200.7 drives........ mega loud seek noise, that could be heard in the next room, it wasnt funny, and the drives were perfect....... this has nothing to do with drive faults, it is just how they are designed.... all Seagate drives (SATA) are set t...

This might be because I'm so unlucky with samples, but I bought a 250 GB OneTouch II a few months back, which houses a 250 GB DM10. - Idle is considerably louder. - Seek is also louder, as a low grumbling - Has high vibration compared to the DM9+ - The DM10 DOES run hotter than the DM9+ Performance...

Yes, because Seagate no longer use AAM, whilst other manufaturers do........

hence their PATA versions are set to quiet mode, sata to noisy mode, as standard......

so, as long as u can change the AAM, doesnt matter what interface u get

I just picked up the 300 gb PATA version of this. Let me say this drive has no idle whine whatsoever. However, the seeks are a big loud but i can't really hear em with my case closed. These things are pretty fast. i installed windows in about 15 min. Is this a serious comment ? Windows in 15 mins ?...

Use Norton ghost..... to make your new HD bootable, from dos, use something like Seagate discwizard or a dos floppy ( fdisk ) as a last resort , as its very slow on large drives alternatively, hook up your new Sata as a 2nd drive, and use windows DISK MANAGER to format it, and set the active partition

Thanks for the reply, I tried linux hdparm and it set the amm flag, however I dont think it did anything as it defently doesnt seem to have any amm. So where in the UK can I get a pair of 80gb or 1 120gb/160gb hard disk that is virtually as quiet as the barracuda 4 during idle and seek? Thanks Jaim...
