I mean I know of plenty of worse processes (eg extracting tar sands) but I was under the impression paper production isn't that environmentally-friendly, esp. in places like China etc. I can only speak to US production. First: Trees grow back and all US tree harvesting is either from managed land t...

If you want to get upset about people being wasteful of resources, paper usage should be VERY low on your list. It's about the most renewable resource there is and is generally produced with little enviromental impact. I'd get upset about plastic being used in place of paper (being non-biodegradable...

The Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe/Premium could work. I think the newer ones have a passive heatpipe for the MB chip. It's a 939-socket board, SLI, dual gigabit network, and SATA support. I have the older version of the Deluxe and had to replace the MB fan with a NB47J heatsink (before the heatpipe version wa...

Suggestions for best Cost:Fold setup?
Just upgraded my computer and realized I have a fair amount of the parts to build another machine which would probably just be used for FAH. I'm looking for suggestions on what would be the cheapest setup for best folding results. What I have: AMD A64 3200+ (939 socket Winchester) 1 GB (2x512mb) DDR...

Just upgraded my computer (A64 3200+ to a A64 X2 3800+ dual core and went from 1gb to 2gb of faster memory) and have the FAH service running on both cores. (One-Click install worked great.) We'll have to see what this does to my folding progress. Meanwhile, the machine isn't any louder. CPU has gone...

I'd suggest reading the review on the S12-500/600. http://www.silentpcreview.com/article247-page1.html However, the short story is that the S12-500 & 600 use the same controller and have the same noise signature. The S12-330, 380 and 430 use a different, and quieter, fan controller. If you really ca...

If it helps you feel better, I'm using a Nexus on a XP-120 without any problems. (AMD64 3200+ Winchester, not a P4, though.) I use a T-Balancer to control my fan speed, and being fairly conservative, it keeps the Nexus running between 50%-66%....which means I can never hear it inside an AcoustiPacke...

How you're cooling isn't as bothering as the sudden normal temp change. What are you using to determine your temps? Did you change anything? (Please say you started running Folding @ Home....in which case your CPU is never idle.) What about the temp where the PC is? It's getting hotter in some parts...

From the thread on reversing the direction that the heatsink fan is blowing ( http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?p=180795#180795 ), I changed the fan on the XP-120 to blow UP. This thread reminded me to try the same thing. From my setup (see http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=21871 ), I also have 3 120mm fans all in the upper rear of the case. I've got a similiar setup, using the GeForce 6600 card, though. Still, it's a passively cooled card. See my writeups on my system build. At the end I'm discussing the temps I'm getting. The picture above looks like a Nexus fan without the Nexus label. That's not what I found at CompUSA. I picked up a Mad Dog Whisper Fan 120mmx25mm at CompUSA last Friday. It was a black fan with a standard 3-wire plug. It stayed in the case about 3 min before I jerked it out and the old fan (a Panaf...

A lesson learned on motherboard BIOS. The Asus Motherboard I bought came with BIOS level 1002 on it. I found that if you disconnected either the Chipset Fan on the motherboard (by, uh, replacing it with a passive heatsink) or the CPU fan (because it was being run by a seperate fan controller), the P...

I haven't enabled Cool-N-Quiet. Between F@H always running the CPU at 100% and the T-Balancer having control of all the fans, I don't think it would do anything for me. Thoughts and experiences with Power Supply Units. I decided to try the SL350S that comes with this case. It definately is quieter than a normal PSU, so kudos to Antec for that! It was also noiser than I wanted and was blowing warm air even at idle. Having tried it for, oh, 1 or 2 days, I ordered a S...
