Re: Haswell comes to NUC

For sure, it isn't as sleek as the standard case, but if it's being mounted behind a TV or something, who cares...

It will definitely cost more, but how much and when was always the question.

Re: Haswell comes to NUC

Saw some other sites post pictures of a slightly thicker version of this kit that has room for a 2.5" drive inside. It's supposed to come out this month...eagerly anticipating that.

Mike, did Intel comment on that at all?

Agreed. They are all the same except newer models have larger buffers. None will be louder than any other drive you might be using. If vibrations are an issue, suspension will be your only cure.

Re: CPU fan to replace Scythe SY1225SL12M

Why not just get the "L" version of that fan? It comes stock at 800rpm. I've had several, none have exhibited any chirping with mobo header control or a FanMate. They will go down to ~500rpms easy too.

Re: Silent ATX case with top-to-bottom 5.25" drives

One thing to keep in mind is that a home file server with 15 drives is generally nothing like a file server of the same capacity in most other environments. I have a similar server and 99.9% of the time (probably an under estimate) all but one or two drives are spun down. So drive noise is minimal,...

Re: Silent ATX case with top-to-bottom 5.25" drives

Remember that SILENT and QUIET are two different things. Both are relative to the environment. However, if you are loading any case up with hard drives in 5x3 enclosures, the resulting effect will be anything but SILENT, even if they are 5400rpm "Green" drives. You'll need to cool those drives, whic...

Please try using Search.

Note the part about using Nero DriveSpeed to control your drive's speed. Only way to make it truly quiet and I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with BR drives as well.

Yeah, 7V mods should really only be done at the termination end of any PSU leads with nothing downstream or daisy-chained except other 7V-driven fans (by using the standard molex configuration).

Re: multiple hard drives, not for server but for RAID speed

Do you mean "low end", ie old cheapest SSDs are not as good as a spinning drive? The problem has not fundamentally changed. Some old SSDs are pretty good for the money actually. The newest SSDs are still not as fast at writing sequentially as a pair of hard drives costing less than half as much. Th...

Re: Optimizing for idle power consumption

I think there's a little more to it than picking an intel or MSI board. You obviously don't need to get a P or Q-series board for a low power integrated video system. That being said, intel boards are solidly reliable, no doubt. And MSI makes high quality components, too. Stick to the H-series, and ...

Re: Using old case for multi-disk NAS? Can it be quiet?

Are you actually planning on using that PII or do you have something else in mind to power the server? I've made attempts to convert old heavy-gauge steel cases to file servers. What usually ends up happening is that it's just easier to spend $50 on a newer case (like an Antec 300) and throw another...

Re: Dampening vibration on Mugen 2 fan?

I've used very small pieces of double-sided sticky foam to insert between a fan and it's heatsink where vibrations are a problems. Usually, they are thin enough where they don't cause a problem with the wire clips. Bigger issue is what you are running underneath where you need a fan on the Mugen to ...

Re: Any way to balance a 200mm top fan in my Antec 900?

The larger Antec fans are notorious for vibrations. Mostly it's due to the thin frames, which are way to flimsy for adequate rigidity. On my 300, I used some "Peel & Seal" around the frame to add some mass to the frame and dampen the vibrations . Also using some type of isolation/decoupling will gre...

Re: Slipstream SH model and Asus fan controls

You probably would have been better served starting with the M model (1200rpm). They move plenty of air for any sane purpose that would be visited on this site and they undervolt very well.

The SH's are not likely to slow enough to make them really quiet, but I could be wrong.

Re: Antec TruePower 650W issue ?

Just to make sure that the fan is the problem, try stopping it with a straw and see if the noise goes away. If it does, then your fan is the culprit. In that case, it may be the fan's bearings are shot. Or it might mean that there is a problem with the fan controller. Either way, you'd can try for a...

If it's just one or two drives, you can suspend it vertically (on it's side).

It's not the best looking configuration, but I've used it to great effect in an Antec 300.

You can also try wrapping some thin layers of fiberglass mat around the pipes transmitting the vibrations. Some stores might even carry pipe-wrap that might work.

I used to have a couple Zalman CNPS7000-AlCu's that I fan modded with some older Scythe Kaze-Jyu 100mm fans (one at 1500rpm, one at 1200rpm). Stock, those heatsinks weren't too good, or rather, the fans weren't. With fan mod, they performed pretty well. I even used one on my E6550 for a while when I...

I'm not really sure what you are asking... But if you're looking for a case that will have the DVD drive on the side, there aren't many. There are some full tower cases (as in HUGE) that fit that mold, but they cost $500 (Lian-Li X500 comes to mind). You don't see a lot, since they need to be much w...

"Guitar string" is a good description as that's exactly what you'd have. If drive security is an issue, I'd look at getting some small bungee cords from your local home improvement store. They can be cut, tied, and routed just about any way you want. More importantly, you can use some cable anchors ...

Re: Why does my SB system use 2x more Watts than in SPCR rev

Doesn't take a lot to add 18W to a system. 1/3 of that could be your second HDD (WD Green). You also have 3 fans in your setup (1-2W each). Not to mention your PSU is a tad less efficient than the one SPCR uses. Combined with the potential inaccuracy of a Kill-A-Watt, I think you're doing just fine....
