I'm planning to buy an 8800GTS shortly.

What are my options to quiet an 8800GTS if it turns out the stock fan/cooler is still too loud? I'd like to stay away from water cooling.

I think mine goes straight to the PSU....been a while since I peeked inside. You will be amazed and delighted how much quieter this makes your system; that stock fan on the 800XL is like a WWII fighter parked under your desk. Hugely annoying.

Is there a reliable (and free) software program out there that displays ATI vid card temps? I have an X800XL if that helps.

I went with a S12-430 last week. At 950-ish RPMs after an hour of Half-life 2, I can't hear a thing from the PSU. Very pleased.

I see some folks who idle at 38c and full load at 43c.

I see others who idle at 38c and full load at 60c.

Obviously the first scenario is preferred. Can any generalizations be made to explain the big swing, and ways to narrow the gap in the second scenario?

I can't get MBM5 to show any temperature readings with this board (I have the latest BIOS). The MBM5 site doesn't list this model as compatible, but has anybody with this board been able to get it to work? If so, how?

I also bought into the hype and recently purchases a 7700alcu. Cranked low is 'tolerable.' Thing cranked up all the way is a veritable 747.
