I tested mine the same way; it ran at 1400 rpm @12v rather than the 1300 rpm it is rated at. Same conclusions as you.

I think that your tests eliminate the PSU. What I would do next is this. Disconnect any drives, - hard, optical etc - both power and data leads. So that all you have is the motherboard, cpu, memory and video card. Remove one pair of your four RAM sticks. Try to start. If this doesn't work, then remo...

Re: New system won't boot

I'm sure about the PSU and video card as I my PC died recently and I had the parts tested to diagnose what turned out to be a fried motherboard. Given that history I would be extremely suspicious about the PSU. It may be that it passes a basic diagnostic test, but it does not necessarily mean that ...

You don't have to turn off the supply to a fan to stop it turning, dropping the voltage to around 1V/2V can do it. Some fan controllers use this technique, for example http://www.bcchardware.com/index.php?op ... mitstart=1.

I must admit that having fitted 2 Noctua CPU coolers to date I have always replaced the Noctua fan with a PWM model. This is partly because I prefer the logic of PWM, i.e. low fan revs at idle increasing with the load and also because it plain just works. The choice of PWM fan is partly dictated by ...

It seems to me that you are putting a high-performance, hot running Core i7 system into a smallish case with virtually no airflow. You are also going to buy 1600 memory which suggests you are planning to overclock which has implications in terms of additional power consumption and heat production. I...

Re: First Core i5 benchmarks

Basically, the Core i5 870 seems to match i7 920 in performance, with the i5 750 lagging behind to varying degrees. Core i5/Core i7 is not determined solely by socket 1156 or 1366. So the 870 is a Core i7 CPU, along with the 860 and the 860s. The 750 and 750s will be Core i5. Core i7 on the LGA 115...

Why not consider using the Akasa AK-CB002 PWM splitter cable. This has the advantage of not drawing fan power through the motherboard headers, and any motherboard with a PWM CPU socket will be sufficient. See (in the UK) for example http://www.dabs.com/products/Akasa-PWM-splitter---smart-fan-cable-5...

There are several makers out there. I have used these http://www.acoustiproducts.com/en/fan_gaskets.asp, and also the arrowhead type mounts without being able to discern any great difference between the two. Either is better than screwing fans directly to cases.

The latest PWM fan that I have bought is the Akasa Apache 120mm which has a HDB bearing and a 600 to 1300 rpm range. I don't particularly care for the name or cosmetics but it is a very quiet fan. Asus P6T is a fine board and will do everything you want. If you can afford it the Asus P6T Deluxe V2 is even better, with somewhat improved cooling and 16+2 phase power rather than the 8+2 of the vanilla P6T.

I suspect that your motherboard will treat your CPU as a vanilla Q9550, not the Q9550S until you update the BIOS. So any problems in booting and running your new system are unlikely. And as you have one of the modern Gigabyte motherboards updating the BIOS is easy. The latest BIOS can be downloaded ...

The major issues you will have to deal with in an overclocked i7 system would seem to be the power consumption, and the heat it produces. Based on the reports on the web, it would be by no means unusual to find a OC i7 system power consumption in the 350w to 400w range under load. Loads somewhat ove...
