This has been reviewed separately by SPCR and as this page shows http://www.silentpcreview.com/article849-page2.html the Zerotherm is somew...

His temps under load were 45C over ambient... But he doesn't have a fan on the HR-01! And the system is stable. The plot thickens! 8) Unlike the OP in this thread, he has a top mounted PSU, which actually suits a hot Core i7 because it will speed up with temperature, and act (as was originally inte...

In tother words in the 40-50 range of temps. Yes, if your calculation is correct, then at 12V the same fan should be 40C over ambient, so 40C+26C=66C when it fact it is 76C. Now it was originally at 7V, and with 24C ambient it should have been 43C+24C=67C, but in fact it was 80C. So 10C hotter than...

Do you mean that the OPs cooling system is under-performing compared to what is expected? Well the OP did mention an ambient temperature of 24. It was not said what the ambient temperature was when 76C was recorded. If we assume that it was 26C, then 76C-26C=50C over ambient. Look up the SPCR revie...

Yeah, but all i7s are rated at a TDP of 130 Watts, and its unlikely that the 920 uses as much power as the 950. Wich leads me to belive that the 920 uses less than 130 Watt. ...i would guess idle usage is 10-20 Watts? So maybe around 100 Watts at load? Intel don't say all i7s are rated at 130watt T...

The behaviour you're observing is entirely normal. As you say until Windows kicks in the BIOS on the graphics card is in control, and it is set to run the fan at at a high level, sometimes 100%. I guess the manufacturers adopt this approach because it guarantees that the fan starts, whereas at 40% o...

Part of the issue here is that with a very good CPU cooler, the Thermalright HR-01 Plus and with a 920 at stock clocks, even allowing for ambient temperatures, you should not be seeing anything like 76C. I am aware that people who overclock Core i7s accept temperatures in the 75C-80C range as a matt...

You just slide the controller out of the cooler and mount it on the case using the double sided sticky pad provided.

The key factor here as you have already identified is that you are going to be gaming at 1920 x 1080 (or maybe 1920 x 1200), and having built a system to game at this res I think it is quite a tough call. First of all the benefits of overclocking diminish as the res increases, and at that setting co...

It's not just about wattage calculations. I wouldn't put a CX 400 into a gaming system and to me its only virtue is that it is the cheapest Corsair CPU. It would make a good buy for people with non-gaming systems to replace 'no-name' 350-400w PSUs. For gaming a PSU with the build quality to survive ...

The system proposed should be quite a nice budget gaming system, with all the components well-matched against each other. Yes, the point being that if an 1100 rpm fan is not good enough, then going to 1200 rpm is probably too small an increase to make a difference. And while the increase in noise level with the 1600 is obvious so is the increased air flow. If the 1600 works in terms of air flow at least you have the op...

I think 72C is too much for a stock 920; something in the 60s would be better. Core i7s run hot. Given an ambient of 24C I think your idle temps look OK. You obviously have a problem controlling load temperatures. I would recommend a PWM fan, because if you going to be gaming then you can't assume that 1000 rpm will be enough for a stressed i7 920. The ability to use 2 x 4 pin plugs or 1 x 8 pin plug is there to cater for the increased power draw of higher end CPUs. On a Core i7 motherboard for example it is normally recommended if one of the Intel Extreme Edition CPUs is being used, or when overlocking.
