Quiet, large external drives?
Hi all I'm looking for some external storage for my HTPC (2010 Mac Mini), and figured I'd ask around in here. I'm looking for a 3, preferably 4 TB drive. I've got my eye on the WD My Book Essential 4 TB (WDBACW0040HBK), but I'd be interested to hear people's opinions. I'll be using it for storage of...

- Run hdparm from a command line (as administrator) like this: hdparm -B 254 hda Trouble is, this doesn't seem to work on the WD Green series: drdaz@el-mahico:~$ sudo hdparm -B254 /dev/sdc /dev/sdc: setting Advanced Power Management level to 0xfe (254) HDIO_DRIVE_CMD failed: Input/output error Whic...

Possible cause + solution under Linux?
I just bought and installed a 1.5TB WD Green Power. I remembered that this was a potential issue, and saw in the SPCR review of the 2TB model that the behavior had returned. What may be interesting for Linux users here is that I have managed to make the Load / Unload Cycle count stop increasing at s...

[Linux] Setting DVD drive read speed
If you're running Linux on an HTPC setup like me, you may well be getting tired of the noise produced by your optical drive. My drive (an NEC 3540A) ran silently when fed a commercially produced DVD (or perhaps CD) but howled when given anything else. There are several commands which might be able t...

Thanks!
Hey guys! Thanks for the replies. I've ordered the lc17 :-). deksawyer: I've studied your build closely over the last couple days. Nicely done... sundevil: I've also read that massive thread... I've totally been obsessing about the choices I make on this one! It's worth noting that I'm rebuilding my...

Silverstone cases with 60mm exhausts...
Hello all, I am currently thinking about rebuilding my HTPC and am leaning towards a Silverstone case. As the subject suggests, I am curious what people have been doing about the 60mm fans at the back of many of Silverstone's HTPC cases. Sspecifically, I am looking at the lc13 since I find its desig...

@ Hifriday No worries! Actually you have been of help, since this indicates that there is something other than just BIOS version which dictates whether or not multiplier settings work in these systems. I'll give BIOS resetting thing one last try after my exam on Friday... Now I think of it I'm not 1...

@ Hifriday 8rdavcore doesn't allow for multiplier adjustment on the fly, however it does allow for VCore and FSB adjustment (as well as VDimm and a host of other stuff). It also allows for these adjustments to be made on certain triggers, like CPU usage @ x% for ytime... Given that there are bigger ...

Ok thats *really* interesting... My ez18 is a little under a year old (purchased November 2004), but IIRC didn't come with the latest BIOS. I'm fairly certain I upgraded to 1.12b at some point, and recently downgraded to 1.07 when I received my XP-M and couldn't change the multiplier to anything but...

Hola! And thanks... The BSODs are during regular use and are something I experienced with this BIOS before I installed the XP-M. One of the BSODs I have been getting is apparently common in nForce2 (not Ultra400) motherboards pushed close to 400MHz FSB, so that may explain it, however I have gotten ...

ez18 BIOS revision?
Hi there, I am also the (fairly) proud owner of an ez18. I just got my hands on what appears to be one of the last XP-M CPUs available in my area and have been having some trouble since... Essentially, it turns out that in my case resetting the BIOS wasn't enough. I had to downgrade my BIOS to a muc...
