simple 12/7/5V fan controller (UK centric?)

First off I wasn't sure where to post this, here or silent front. Mods feel free to move. I found a very simple fan controller that can control 4 devices per voltage at Maplin (UK equivalent of Radio Shack). Pictures and ordering info are available here . It's very basic, no speed monitoring, no dyn...

Now consider drives, like the Momentus 5400.3, that are only rated for 600,000 load cycles The travelstar quoted in the white paper was rated for 300K head load/unloads and managed 1million+. OTOH it may well have been the best drive of the batch. I agree with you - people should look after their 2...

so what is it exactly about a head load/unload that is harmful to the disk? I thought that with the "ramp" load/unload system that hitachi developed in the '90s that the wear you would see (compared with CSS type drives) was drastically reduced - a 2005 Hitachi white paper details that a travelstar ...

I'd recommend a *nix box with natively formatted disks and running samba. It won't prevent data corruption due to virii, but it will effectively stop malware affecting your fileserver. Having said that there is the possibility to run AV on your linux box to scan files as they appear on the server - ...

let me guess, existing drive(s) with data on it(them) and you want to plug it(them) into a linux box? my suggestion is don't. In my experience NTFS support is buggy, prone to crashing the system (unless the NTFS volume is mounted read-only) and generally not a good idea. OTOH that was with the NTFS ...

AFAIK the only difference between passphrase recovery on WEP/WPA is the time involved to recover the passphrase - 2 minutes versus 2 days.
And that's due to AES having to be bruteforced.

I was going to say "have you updated the bios recently?" but then I realised that CPUID would be using the "CPUID" instruction that a lot of processors newer than 5 years old have and therefore would not be reliant on the BIOS (AFAIK) to identify the CPU.

i'd say that crystalclock and wine will not work as the necessary hooks in the linux kernel will not exist until the right kernel module is loaded or statically compiled into the kernel.

kernel hackery or bios flash (assuming a newer bios actually allows vcore adjustments)

Re: Dual Core multitasking - how well is it working?

From a more complex perspective, a game or other application will not take up 100% of the CPU unless it is specifically designed to do so like Prime95. really? if a program wants cpu time and the OS isn't busy doing something else with that cpu resource then that program will take up 100% of the cp...
