Re: Near-Silent mITX SG07 w/ Acoustipack, HR-02, GUP Smart D
My current PC has a Samsung HD103SJ hard drive in a Growup Japan enclosure. I have it sitting behind the case on a block of foam, connected to an internal SATA header. It's been like that since 2009. After running all day the hard drive is at 26c according to the SMART monitoring. If you don't need ...

Re: HP MicroServer
Could the same loss of GPT partitions on a >2TB hard drive when used with Windows potentially happen if the motherboard had a UEFI BIOS also then? I'd hope it wouldn't but it would be useful to have a definitive answer either way. It's better to be clear on this sort of issue before you lose all you...

Re: HP MicroServer
My understanding is that this problem wouldn't exist if the motherboard had a UEFI BIOS. As the UEFI BIOS natively supports drives larger than 2TB shouldn't the large drives work properly on a UEFI motherboard, when used with a current Windows operating system, without any drama or workarounds neede...

Re: HP MicroServer
Bugs or not, Windows or Linux, if you cut the power ANY system can take a serious damage. That's why they use those APC units. And if administrated correctly, Windows and Linux/Unix are stable enough to be used in a productive environment. If you don't exactly know what to do and what not to do wit...

I'm really impressed. I think I'm going to have to make something very similar to that too. :) One thing that works well with the Growup Japan hard drive enclosures is to get some cheap thermal paste and put a layer of thermal paste between the metal hard drive shell and the copper plates inside the...

Re: HP MicroServer
I think it's something to do with Windows. Happy drive failures! The interesting thing was that cutting the power didn't just break the mirror but the 3TB drives were also no longer initialised, losing their storage partitions and drive letters. The 250gb drive was unaffected. I should really have ...

Re: HP MicroServer
After that happened the first time I also tried the two 3TB drives using the built in Windows drive mirroring after formatting and re-initialising them. Windows Home Server 2011 built the mirror with no problems. As a test I then pulled the power cable whilst the server was running, just to see what...

Re: HP MicroServer
I've got a HP N40L Microserver at the moment. The stock unit is quite noisy, most of the noise coming from the PSU. The Scythe Slipstream fan mod mentioned in the SPCR article is easy to do and works well. There's a torx key included inside the server's case door that you can use for removing the fa...

Re: ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II
OTOH, my sample does freeze a lot in all sorts of games. It's not a cooling issue. My temp/RPM numbers match those in the review. An RMA is probably called for. A few months ago my brother's Nvidia GTX570 graphics card began crashing in nearly all games. Before then it had been a fairly stable card...

There's an interesting thread about Radeon Bios Editor and fan control here:
http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=114686
It looks like any BIOS fan speed changes you make are currently overriden by driver settings.

These top end graphics cards have always been large, expensive, power guzzlers, and noisy and whether one or other models have more or less of these attributes to me is a bit obscure. But people are free to spend their own money as they see fit, I guess.... However some of that technology is certai...

Having the hard drive external to the case, mounted in a Growup Japan Smartdrive 2002 enclosure stood on a block of foam, actually works quite well. The problem with going for the first DirectX 11 cards to come out is that you don't actually know how well they will run games in DirectX 11. Since the pc is used for music production, currently there is no DAW software (I use Cubase) that uses more than 30% actual CPU when it reaches their DAW peak at CPU usage. I think the vast majority of people like me really want to buy a much more neato Nvidia card like a 260GTX but do not as it is uses a retarded dx 10, not even dx 10.1, and obviously not dx11. Realistically, most PC games being released at the moment (October 2009) are still using DirectX 9. The one...
