My 4000+ is overclocked to 2750 MHz, my RAM is pushed to 500MHz on 2.8V and my X800XL is fanless. The CPU has a 120mm Papst running at minimum speed off an Enermax fan controller, there is another 120mm Papst running at the same speed as a case exhaust fan and the Seasonic PSU has a temperature cont...

I stand by my earlier comments: The internal geometry of a PC is not suited to modelling as it is very complex and non-uniform The actual heat generation of individual components is largely unknown The majority of the heat transfer is through convection, which is very sensitive to surface finish (i....

I've got one which I bought because I liked the idea of using a 3.5" bay rather than a 5.25" bay. I think I read that the controller uses PWM control rather than voltage regulation, but whatever the method, it doesn't turn down very far! I've got 2 papst 120mm fans running off it and I was surprised...

The "traditional" mechanical engineering approach in this situation would be to blow huge amounts of air over it and to hell with the noise! It's a truism that a mechanical engineer only needs two things in his toolbox - a hammer and a condom. If something doesn't work, hit it with the hammer and if...

It's been over a decade since I used CFD (computational fluid dynamics) software at university (I'm a mechanical engineer), but I would make the following comments: The internal geometry of a PC is not suited to modelling as it is very complex and non-uniform The actual heat generation of individual...

I've been reading this thread as I have been planning & building my new PC. I've got a Samsung 200GB drive which is quiet when reading & writing, but he seek noise is still noticeable (it's currently screwed into the cage on my Antec SLK3000B using the standard rubber grommets). My idea is to use th...
