Re: Small quiet budget ATX cases for i7-4790k
Thanks for the recommendations. Isn't the Fractal Design Define S Silent the same size as the Define R5? I have that case now and need to find something smaller.

Small quiet budget ATX cases for i7-4790k
Are there any recommended budget cases that will fit an ATX motherboard which are quiet? The only thing in the case will be the i7-4790k (using the integrated graphics) with a cooler master hyper evo 212 cooler, ATX power supply (though I could get something smaller potentially), and a SSD. The smal...

Living on Borrowed Time, Need Help with Storage Server
I have been living on borrowed time for years and really need to come up with a backup system and centralized NAS. Currently, I have over 40 hard drives, both PATA and SATA, stuck in static bags in my closet. I would really appreciate it if you could help me out with some of my questions and give fe...

Relatively quiet i7-4790k or i7-5820k for FEA and Engineerin
Relatively quiet i7-4790k or i7-5820k for FEA and Engineering Analysis I need some help trying to put together another system beyond my current machine for primarily performing finite element optimization type tasks and other engineering analysis. I haven’t built a system for long time but I would l...

Re: System Build for FEA Simulations
Welcome to SPCR. Regarding your options: if the s/w doesn't scale well beyond 4 cores, does it benefit from the i7/Xeon's hyperthreading? If not, you could dial back to an i5... The downside to Dell builds...it might have a limited BIOS and you might not be able to overclock...that's worth a search...

System Build for FEA Simulations
I need to purchase or put together a system for running FEA simulations ASAP. This is in an academic environment so cost is an issue. The software I plan to run doesn’t scale well beyond 4 cores and the scaling really drops off after 2 cores per simulation though I could run multiple simulations. Th...

Why not first see how the stock CPU cooler works for you. It is "adequate" or Intel wouldn't ship it. Thanks for the reply. I don't really want to pull the motherboard once I have it installed. I thought about it some more and the likelyhood of me overclocking is pretty small. I would much rather k...

Stock Cooler Vs Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus Vs Scythe Mugen
I am currently buying the parts for and i7-860 based system and trying to determine if I really need and aftermarket CPU heatsink and if so which one to get. The parts I have already purchased or are going to reuse: CPU: LGA i7-860 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4P Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800C...

Re: Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P Versus ASUS P7P55D-E for a i7-860
I tend to keep computer hardware for a very long time so I want to be somewhat ready for a SSD and USB3. Unless there is a pressing need to get a system now, wait until the SATA & USB implementations (MB, devices and OS) become more mature. Around the time that those interfaces become mature Intel ...

Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P Versus ASUS P7P55D-E for a i7-860 Build I am trying to decide between two motherboards for an i7-860 build with 2x2GB G.Skill Ripjaws and Windows 7 x64. The two motherboards I am considering are the Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P and the ASUS P7P55D-E. Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P http://www.n...

i ended up scrapping the lot and getting a new case - Chenbro SR107 which has 8*hotswap drives cooled by 2*120mm fans (which i swapped from the screamers to papst) does a really good job keeping the drives cool and silent as its a big heavy steel chassis I have been looking at the Chenbro SR107 as ...

Brainstorm with Me About Storage and Computing Solutions
I would like some help brainstorming for some possible solutions to my computing needs. I have about 900 GB spread over 9 IDE hard drives which are all essentially full. My case is also at its limit in the number of drives that can be stuffed into it. Some of the files on the drives are duplicated o...

I am also interested in the Coolermaster 4-in-3. Has anyone tried in an ANTEC SLK3000B. In a previous thread http://forums.silentpcreview.com/viewtopic.php?t=28467&highlight=4in3 it was mentioned that it would not work in a Antec SLK3700BQE without bending the drive rails. I don't understand why thi...

I also need to connect some additional ATA drives to my system in a ANTEC 3000B and have been looking at systems that mount 3 or 4 hard drives in 3 * 5.25 bays. Some of the items I have looked at include: Cooler Master 4 in 3 (120 mm fan) Scythe Kama Bay Fan with 3 3.5 to 5.25 converters ThermalTake...

I'd say all three are going to be close, and your choice should be dictated by the CPU bracket orientation (I wouldn't want Katana blowing into the PSU), and by how quiet you want your cooler to be (katana and Thermalright make it much much easier to do a fan swap). However if you say you run five ...
