Thanks! Ordered two of them, I'll see how they stack up against the 12cm Scythes.

140 mm fan: Noiseblocker PK-2 or Noctua NF-P14-FLX
I'm looking to quieten down my shinny new CoolerMaster 690 II and I'm trying to settle on a couple of 140 mm fans, one for the top (blowing up and out) and one for the front (blowing in, over the hard drives). I searched high and low and the opinions are split between the Noctua and the Noiseblocker...

please use tinsnips and cut off the jaws. it is great ram but the jaws dont do much. That much is obvious - I always get a kick from the fact that other than FB-DIMMs, I haven't seen heatsinks on server RAM, but only on the "enthusiast" RAM. Can a grand kama cross fit? It has a VERY high height abo...

Best heatsink for i7-860 that would fit inside Antec NSK2480
I am helping a friend quieten down his desktop. He had a i7-860 on a DFI P55 MI-T36, with 8 GB of G.SKILL Ripjaws RAM, all packaged inside a Silverstone SG05B case. Nice cute little system, but the Intel stock fan is atrocious, and there isn't much space inside. I tried a Big Shuriken, but the CPU h...

Go for the P183, in my opinion. Its cooling capabilities should be enough, and it will be a quieter build (given that you switch out the fans). The corsair supports EATX though, while the P18x hug the ATX quite well. SuperMicro boards tend to be larger and I might convert the case into a server at ...

Xigmatek HDT-SD964 is for socket 775 only
I have bought and returned a Xigmatek HDT-SD964 as it only comes with the 775 mounting system, not compatible with 1156.
Oh well, time to try installing the Big Shuriken. I have big fingers and small patience, but I'll give it a try.

Xigmatek HDT-SD964 in Antec NSK2480?
Hello, I was gifted a i7-860 system in a small form factor SilverStone case with the stock Intel cooler. The SilverStone is nice, but it's too open and the noise of the Intel fan drives me bananas. I swapped the Atom D510 motherboard from the Antec NSK2480 into the SilverStone and placed the i860 in...

Re: SMART not supported with WD GP?
I replaced a WD5000AAKS with an AACS drive for use in an external enclosure, but OS X's disk utility reports that SMART is not supported with the drive. Sounds weird to me, but I can't remember whether it was the same case with the AAKS. SMART is supported, but something is fishy with it - it repor...

Best MicroATX AM2 with 4 RAM sockets?
Based on Mike's review and on some other Internet references (mainly Solaris-related blogs) I bought an ASUS M2A-VM motherboard, an Athlon X2 BE-2400 and 4x1GB of OCZ DDR2 800 RAM. Right off the bat the motherboard had problems POST-ing with all four memory sticks installed (and auto memory settings...

one man's "working just fine" is another man's "slowly cooking itself to death". if you consider all the components, and the value of the time it takes to research, build, and maintain a PC, the cost of a replacement motherboard is a very small fraction. and when i said "dumped," i didn't mean it l...

Re: Temperature in bios
Also, note the core temperature as reported by speedfan in your review, 14 C. Unless your test environment is really cold, this is obviously wrong. That is wierd. Speedfan on mine is reporting a much more realistic core temperature of 27C (idle). In Speedfan Temp2 seems to be the chipset temperatur...

Agreed, an 80+ certified 300w ATX power supply should be very efficient at low loads and they aren't too pricey either. Or if you can hack a FlexATX power supply in there the 220w Sparkle SPCR recently reviewed would be a good candidate as well. But that is not fanless, isn't it? Or just get a Pico...

Quiet 100-150W ATX PSU?
I have a burning question: is anybody making a high-efficiency 100-150W power supply in ATX form? I know about picoPSU and friends, but I have to use a microATX case anyway. My servers use 30W on idle, 45W on load and 50W at startup. I don't care for anything more than 100W, but I want something rea...

I suspect the high power consumption is due to the generic power supply; most are probably not more than 50% efficient at such low loads. With the 80Plus power supply you should see much lower power consumption. With the 80+ PSU in NSK2480, the board, with 2 GB of RAM and two 4200 RPM laptop HDDs i...

Just got my VIA C7 motherboard from ClubIt, and ran a few tests. I plugged 2 GB of DDR2-533 and a USB bootable stick, to run memtest and RIP Linux . The power supply is a generic 350W unit that I borrowed from a friend and was plugged in a Kill-A-Watt meter. When running the memtest and in BIOS, the...

I'm searching for something like Silverstone LC19, except at half price
Most small micro-atx cases come with dingy little fans. I will use it for a small VIA board: http://linuxdevices.com/news/NS5305482907.html
