Burnt out motherboard = new build
Hello all, The title says it all, or almost. My old DFI 754 board now rests in peace thanks to a faulty USB hookup (as far as I can tell) and it's time for an upgrade. It's been a while since I followed PC hardware news very closely, so any advice would be appreciated. The PC I'd like to build will ...

share your music
Hey everyone,
Why don't more of you post links to the artist's site (if possible)? In this day and age it's the best way to broaden your musical horizons.
By the way,
Bing Crosby - Jingle Bells. Hilarious.

Dragonette
I've got it on for Dragonette right now, even if I'm way overage for this kind of pop and usually go in for jazz and classical. Been waiting ages for my import CD to arrive here in France!

But I was wondering, is it possible to just copy the windows and account data and program files over to a smaller HDD? If you mean simply selecting the windows and account data and program files in Explorer, then Control-C, Control-V onto another drive, of course you can do it, but the second drive...

Hi there chocolinux, The quietest drive I've ever had was a Seagate 7200.7 120 Gb (PATA), but that might not be what you're looking for. I found the Samsung P80 (SATA) much louder - bought it after reading the recommendations here. Just goes to show.... Of course, I'm in France, so the HDDs might ha...

I do different types of backup, depending on what I'm dealing with. Disc images This is for my operating system/installed programs, which I keep on one partition. Usually once month or so. If anything goes wrong, restore and I'm back on the road in 15 minutes. You must have a second partition for th...

i'd get a douple-pole switch and toggle both the 12v and 5v lines, but that's just me :) Sounds like a good idea, especially since I have no idea what voltage a HDD runs at - 5V? 7V? 12V? Keeping the two lines parallel would create a true ON or OFF situation, not one where just one line was interru...

On/Off toggle switch on Molex extension cable
Hello all, I'm toying with the idea of building my own external hard drive enclosure. Please don't tell me I can buy one for next to nothing, it's just an idea for now and if I ever did it, it would be mostly for the fun. My current enclosure (combo USB/FireWire) has several problems: it runs so hot...

Thanks ultraboy and Thomas, Sounds like good advice from both of you. I've got a bit of air resonance in the case, so I'm planning on putting some foam on the inside to take care of that. At the same time I can tape over the side vents, which have no filters - I can just imagine all the dust that's ...

PSU channel for bottom-side fan?
Hello all, This is my first post here, and let me tell you how happy I am that Silent PC Review exists. Canadians, including yours truly, can take pride in such an endeavour. ‘Nuf said. If the title of this thread doesn’t say it all, here’s what I’m thinking. The PSU channel idea seems to be a reall...
