Your best bet if you want silence and that much storage is to move all of those drives except for a quiet drive for the OS to a NAS somewhere else in the house. Shutting down the unused drives may work to an extent, but in my experience, the constant start-up and shut down sounds of multiple drives ...

I think both of you guys are missing the point. A case itself is not particularly "quiet" or "loud" - there's a certain amount of acoustic damping in a case but without a lot of sound deadening material or a huge amount of weight, the case isn't going to contain noise very well. What a case can be ...

Perhaps the point of a NAS that you are missing is that you are no longer significantly tied to the short cable lengths of USB or Firewire that force you to have the noisy drive in the same room with you. My NAS is rather noisy, but it sits in the basement with my modem, router, etc, and it doesn't ...

The insulation on the P150 is quite thin and hard. I would expect that it reduces panel resonance, but does very little in terms of noise insulation. When I moved my computer to the P150, there was very little improvement in noise right off the bat. In my experience, the P150 gives you lots of abili...

What troubles me are all the people who buy the P150 and never see this thread, and could be in for a rude awakening :( Maybe, but I'm personally from the school of thought that hard disks are much more resilient than people generally believe. I've dropped my laptop, while it was turned on, about 4...

For others, maybe not, but interest was expressed, so there's the info. :D Good tip about the drive trays! I have extra foam packed around my drives, making them safe even if another o-ring f...

Doesn't Antec give instructions to not move the case and twist the bands? IMO, the instructions to not move the case with suspended drives means don't travel or extensively move the case, because the drives could fall out, not "don't move the case for normal maintenance." The bands breaking is an e...

Clark Connect might be a good distribution of linux for your purposes. Simple install and web-based administration without a real GUI. I'd also echo others' sentiments that a really basic machine will suffice here, as well as the option of getting a separate integrated modem/ap/router/firewall unit....

Re: I want to separate my HDDs
I think you're on the right track. When I came to that realization myself, it ended up with me putting a file server in the basement. Now I only need one small drive in my main system. The main problem with SATA or Firewire external enclosures is that you have a significant limitation on cable lengt...

Purchasing an enclosure is probably not necessary. Part of the reason SPCR'ers like 2.5" drives so much is that their power consumption is very low - hence they create very little heat. That means you would likely be safe wrapping it in foam/bubble wrap or whatever is your insulation of choice, and ...

My first thought, as I'm running a couple of CPU's of this vintage myself, is that you should be able to get away with running any of them fanless as long as you have a half-decent heatsink on them, and a good thermal interface. I've been running a socket 370 celeron 1.4 fanless for years now just b...

That is impressive zhenya! It's hard to believe that you can block the front intake and get away with it. There must be a tiny bit of air coming in through the front, around the foam, since the harddrives' temperatures weren't that much higher at all. I will have to try that myself. Yes, there prob...
