Re: Seasonic Titanium PSUs
The Titanium Prime line consists of four members with 850W, 750W, 650W and 600W capacities. The smallest of them uses a passive design, meaning that it doesn't have a cooling fan, offering the lowest possible noise output. To the best of our knowledge, this the only Titanium fanless PSU available o...

But just might be a game changer! http://www.tomshardware.com/news/seasonic-prime-80-plus-titanium-psu,30861.html Seasonic's competit...

Re: Crucial MX100 512GB & Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSDs
The 1 TB Samsung 840 EVO is probably the go-to drive in its class, since there's no MX100 alternative. All 840 EVOs offer the RAPID mode (albeit one that cannot use as much RAM as the newer 850 Pro), and it seems the recent issues (poor performance reading older data) have been fully addressed with ...

Idle consumption is a radical leap from its predecessor:
There's been talk of 3 bit flash for some time - once the technology is sorted it may well bring the death of the platter drive.

Re: Crucial M4 64GB: Solid-State on a Budget
Just thought I'd point this out from the 4th paragraph: The write performance is listed as only 95 GB/s maximum I wouldn't complain with that. :D However, I think the value for money for the 128GB is better, especially with write performance factored in. I recently upgraded from a 256GB to a 512GB M...

Re: So the WD 3.5 green is more quiet than 2.5?
Worth noting that newer 1TB Scorpios now only have 2 platters and a standard 9.5mm form factor. This should be slightly quieter than its 3-platter predecessor, and should keep a 2-platter 3.5" Green very honest.

Nope, not sure which part, there isn't a lot to it anyway. When I went to boot the computer it would start to boot and then turn off and retry over and over. The coroner has said no autopsy is necessary as it died of natural causes. Goes to show they are a quality bit of kit though. Cheers.

G'day all, just thought I'd let you know that my 120w PicoPSU has finally died after 5.5 years in service. It was originally an impulse buy after Devon Cooke and Mike Chin's May '06 review and was purchased with the 80w EDac brick recommended in the article. Based on the SMART data of my near 2-year...

Re: Hitachi Deskstar 7K4000 - 4TB
Hitachi stated in 2008 that it intended to have a 5TB drive on sale in 2010. This is now technically possible with 1TB platters, but I suspect for marketing reasons they will take their time about doing it.

Re: 2011 SSD pricing (for drives >= Intel G2 X-25V 40GB perf
I have some egg on my face for predicting that the Intel 320 with 25nm flash would result in major price drops after the initial honeymoon period. Look at the 300GB model, a monstrous 1.8% price drop in 5 months. The Vertex 3 has emerged as a value buy but I have no idea if the early reliability con...

Re: Are Scorpios vibrators now? Or did I just get a bad one?
I bought a 640GB Scorpio and found it to be a bit noisier than my older 40GB drives, but this is understandable given the doubling of the number of platters. Overall they are still my favourite HDD (not that I have a vast amount of experience with different models) though variance from sample to sam...

andymcca : That is one of those 'consensus' things which in practise can be expected to vary either way quite a bit. But here's a couple of references of sorts. Keep in mind SSDs use the same basic technology as USB flash drives - they can withstand more writes but I don't think they would last any...

Re: SSD Extreme Overprovisioning = 5X Intel IOPS/Endurance??
I don't have overprovisioning experience but can make a couple of comments. Regarding endurance, it is important to put this in a real-world context by calculating how many writes it will actually do. As far as I know, flash drives all drop dead around the 10-year age, to say nothing of being obsole...

Can anyone confirm that a 160G Intel x25 will last exactly twice as long as an 80G Intel x25... assuming identical usage? No, unless the drive is only used for caching purposes or something. Re: Which One? Intel 320 vs Intel 520 vs Intel X25-M
I should clarify that point, yes the X25-M will have more write cycles per cell. I make the assumption that as soon as the 320's 'new release premium' wears off it will be substantially better value than its predecessor. Remember when a G1 cost $600? Still, perhaps I should reserve my comments until...

Re: Which One? Intel 320 vs Intel 520 vs Intel X25-M
I've not lost data nor have I heard of it happening, but in theory if the power is cut to the drive before a write is complete - especially in a power failure or unsafe shutdown scenario - there can be data loss on any drive. Intel has chosen to build further upon its reputation for trouble-free ope...

If your system doesn't have native SATA 6Gb/s support you may wish to consider an add-in card to get the most out of it. The X18-M is supposed to have the same performance specs, but uses a non-standard SATA connector type as is the norm for 1.8" drives.
I expect there will be a lot of cheap secondhand X25-Ms on the market starting about now.

I presume different types of storage would respond differently. I have no idea but I guess that optical disc storage would probably be least affected.
