Actualy it's the coolest of all my internal drives. It's mounted inside of an Aluminum case and the airflow through the, now empty, fan hole is not too bad. The drive is at 27C whereas the others are in the mid 30s.

If you pull the top bay covers off and look down the passage created, you can see the CPU cooler. This is the most direct path for airflow, no twists turns or other obstructins to deal with. On my rig I found this to have the most benefit and made grills to cover the open bays.

The simplest mod of all will improve your airflow: remove the slatted front doors. Just pop them open and depress the tab by the top hinge. The filters remain in place, and look okay. Have you considered the Scythe Ninja for CPU cooling? I'm very impressed with the ones I'm using.

Do you have any drives in the upper cage? If not I'd be inclined to take out the cage and mount the fan at the front. You may be just recirculating some of the air in your setup now and not drawing all of the fresh air that you could.

You're running the same CPU as I am, and slightly overclocked to boot. I think if it were underclocked and undervolted it would run without a fan, but that's no fun :D How about ducting to the rear exhaust fan, that's the way that I went. It's not silent, but it is very quiet and somewhere to start....

They're all quiet if you don't use the fan

Seriously though, I have the Scythe Ninja and I think it's just great, I just bought a second one for my Intel system.
