Re: ferrite chokes on monitor cables....an informal poll
My older DVI cables have chokes, but I've got a coupl've new cables with lower-profile heads (no "box" behind the connector) that do not, and none of my HDMI or DP cables have chokes.

Re: Windows 8: what do you think about it?
While I wouldn't use it on a desktop, I've actually switched to Windows 8 for my home server, as the "Storage Spaces" let me do proper drive pooling, just like good old Windows Home Server v1. It's also a proper 64bit OS so I can use more than 4gb of RAM :). However I did have to pay $5 to buy Start...

Re: Mystery sound from HD PLex
It's probably electrical noise from the motherboard. My old x58 board was very noisy in that respect, particularly during drive accesses for some reason! Not an awful lot you can do about it really.

Re: Help me decide: AXP-140 or Kühler 620?
It really depends on your definition of "quiet". I find the pump on the Kuhler 620 relatively inoffensive, and can't hear it over my Nexus PWM fans once they spin up over 1k RPM during heavy load. Not that they're particularly quiet fans either, but they make a pleasant enough whoosh .

Re: Upgrade from Antec p180: P280 or else?
Have you considered a 5.25" > 3.5" bay adapter such as the Lian Li EX-36B1 for your P180 instead of getting a new case? http://www.lian-li.com/v2/en/product/product06.php?pr_index=557&cl_index=2&sc_index=5&ss_index=12&g=f May do the job for you if you've not filled all the 5.25" bays in your P180, a...

Re: High End GPUs and "The Mod"
Everyone has their own idea of quiet :) I went for the "several quiet fans" rather than "one or two loud fans" method of cooling, which has been shown to be just as valid. My case fans are all 1200rpm Slipstreams running from a fan controller set to ~50%, while the two CPU fans are Nexus PWM models ...

Re: High End GPUs and "The Mod"
I've been running "The Mod" (via a dwood bracket) for a few weeks now on my MSI 670 (reference PCB). Mostly did it for the reduction in noise, as the reference 670 fan has a particularly grating growl. Used the bracket along with an Antec H20 620, with the 620 radiator mounted internally on the rear...

Re: I give you the ANTEC SOLO II
(iii) Wide Optical Drive bay. I cannot comprehend what Antec were thinking when they designed the optical bays, but they are much wider externally than an optical drive so an optical drive has a 2mm gap on both the left and right sides. It looks like crap. I was confused by this on the original Sol...

Assuming you're running IntelBurnTest or something similar as a load test, those temperatures are about what I'd expect for an IB CPU, particularly with a relatively slow fan like that.

Can't offer any advice on the case, but a word of warning - GTX 670s with the reference nVidia cooler are far from silent. I just bought one myself, and am in the middle of concocting crazy cooling strategies for it to avoid the growling of the stock blower fan. I'd definitely recommend one of the 6...

Re: Nofan cases - fanless
I find it kind odd that they put a fanless CPU cooler into a fairly cheap thin-steel case (it's a re-badged In-Win) that has no provision for drive suspension or improved GPU cooling :/ (Oh, that is if you can fit a GPU in there, looks like it blocks the first two slots on the motherboard). I'd rath...

To be fair, they don't come up much on the US review sites because they primarily operate in Europe. But I'll agree they're not making a good impression with this one :-/.

Yeah, I'll second that. Your hardware list should be based around what has been tested compatible on a Hackintosh install, rather than what is fastest or cheapest or whatnot.

Very nice . Been considering castors for my P183, but I think I'm just going to have to trade down to a lighter case - I attend LAN parties sometimes, and it's just too much!
Do appreciate a nice tidy build in the P18x series though

A modular PSU just means one where most (or all) of the cables are detachable, so you only need to use as many as your system requires, rather than having to find room for spare ones in the case.Mettyx wrote:What does it mean when PSU is modular, I know what the word means but how is that related to a PSU?

Re: Any Intel 7-series mITX boards w/DC in?
Apart from the missing CIR header there`s another thing I don`t like about the DQ77KB: some of the voltage regulating transistors are located on the underside of the pcb. Granted, this will be a non issue for many but it`s a regression nevertheless. With temperatures over here exceeding 35 c in sum...

Looks like a surface mount resistor. I doubt they'd accept the drive for RMA if it's been physically damaged like that, unfortunately. Probably best to relegate it to occasional use and pickup a new one to replace it.

Re: to match...or not to match...brands in the Antec P183
I've had a P183 with a CP850 for a few years now (pretty much since they were released), and haven't been able to fault the PSU at all. It's very quiet, efficient enough (if not up to the standards of the new Gold/Platinum boxes), pretty cheap for what it is, and the mostly-modular cables are no mor...

I used an Intel D945GSEJT in a slim case w/a 320gb HDD as an always-on system while I was working offshore. Pulled around 11w from the wall at the Windows desktop and didn't require a fan. Can heartily recommend it if you don't need much CPU performance .

Re: Prolimatech Genesis CPU Heatsink: Retaking the Crown
For what it's worth, this just barely fits in my P183 on an Asus P8Z68-V. By barely I mean that the heatpipes on the top-down section are actually contacting the back of my optical drives, and the tower section is maybe a millimetre or two away from having issues with the side panel going on :). Nic...

Smallest case I know of that comes close to that specification is the Coolermaster Elite 360:

I doubt you'll find anything substantially smaller that'll support a full size ATX board.
