first of all, a thanks to another poster who mentioned this app, i never would've even installed it otherwise. gigabyte ees: some app that calculate watts saved by enabling ees, what i care about however is the real time cpu power display which is in watts. powered by intersil, not sure what that is...

are good fans worth it?

a 120mm fan is the only moving part in my pc, currently a glacialtech 1000rpm enter-bearing fan. it's ok, i think, but i've never owned a 'good' fan. motherboard controlled, it spins at about 700 rpm in a high 20C environment and as low as 450rpm when the pc is first booted, reported temps are about...

from the last few performance based reviews i've read (maybe 3 months old?), the seagate hdd remained near the back of the pack for 'real world' benchmarks. 7200rpm seagates were losing to 5400rpm wds in some tests  you might want to take some time to read some recent reviews, just to make su...

sounds cool. you'll have more success at different forums i think, cause most people here are probably running 2 or 3 fans, with one psu controlled. and with mobos having decent control over at least 2 fans nowadays, you'd really need a particular reason to want a physical controller. if you do it t...

the main advantage i think is rpm range. voltage controlled fans can need more than 7v to start or even spin, whereas pwm fans can spin alot slower since the v remains high regardless of the rpm. also, old fan controllers used resistors to control v, which meant heat when slowing down fans, pwm prod...

yes.

as long as the header supports both pwm and voltage control- and even if it doesn't, there should be another one close by that will.

i actually prefer voltage control, most recommended fans are 3 pin and i've experienced some anomalies with speedfan+pwm.

Also, on this thread, BillyBuerger mentions that the GA-MA785GMT-UD2H uses relative voltage settings in the BIOS, so CnQ works with the offset voltage when you're undervolting. Vicotnik counters that his GA-MA78GM-S2H does not do that. I'm wondering if the board in this review does? Yes, it does. E...

you certainly can!
but the main problem is the uncommon fan they use, a 70x70x15 i believe.

i would stick a 80 or 92 in it's place, with foamy double sided tape on the hub- the centre of the hs should be solid, so you can get a good hold.

edit: use something heat resistant! :D

i missed that you were running semi passive, in which case reseating the heatsinks isn't going to do much (unless the stock stuff is completely useless), all it'll do is make the heatsinks reach their stable temps quicker. in a passive environment, a bigger hs can only be as effective as convection....

very impressive psu.

with fan controllers like this, it raises the question whether you can simulate something similar with your own psu.
for example: with a low powered system drawing <100w on load, would it be safe to run a 80plus 120mm fan psu fanless, with the fan hole facing upwards?
