If anyone's interested, I have a ST3500320AS 500GB (now about 3 months old) and must say that Seagate has made massive improvements since the 7200.9 series. Subjectively, it is quieter at idle than my Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD5000KS, which is still fairly high on the SCPR recommended 3.5" hard ...

It is a Rosewill RCX-Z5 (http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1232/r ... index.html)

Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme was out of stock at NewEgg and my local B&M (and still is). Will probably upgrade to that sometime in the next couple months.

Thanks, that explanation makes sense.

Hi psionic, got some questions for you. How do you feel Intel's onboard audio compares with your previous board? Can you touch the ICH9R southbridge and see if it doesn't run too hot? (Some people reported very high SB temps with this board.) Is it possible to configure the BIOS to beep if one of t...

I bought a Intel DP35DP board with my Intel E8400. My previous board, an ASUS P5B Deluxe (P965) supports the 45nm chips with a BIOS update, but unfortunately the board died in the middle of the flash, so I had to buy this board at a B&M. Normally I don't buy Intel boards because they seem a little s...

Sorry for the late reply. The PSU is still running fine and I have since upgraded my system to a Core 2 Duo (guess I better fix the sig). All excellent points. Also, by the time games start coming out that actually make use of DX10 we will be looking at Q1 2007 at the earliest. And by that time, everyone will be speculating about the "2nd generation" of DX10 cards which will be using a more mature technology and sporting all sorts of ...

I believe that particular heatsink has a 120mm fan that rests "inside" the fin bank.

The Tuniq Tower is often sometimes referred to as the best air cooling when paired with a high-speed fan.

Looking at this mounting mechanism, it will *probably* work on AM2, since it only uses the center clips. However, if I were you, I would wait to see what stock HSF you get with your 4600+ first.

I'm sure the IceQ is way quieter than stock for a X1900XTX, but there sheer size of the GPU and amount of heat generated by that card tells me that it would have a hard time competing against the 7900GTX in the silence department. From what I remember, the stock Liberty fan spun a little faster, but not much. I want to say somewhere around 1000rpm. What are your system specs? Because unless your drawing a ton of power, I'm guessing your assumption is right and the PSU is sucking in a lot of heat from your CPU.

A 7900GTX is very quiet with it's 92mm axial cooling fan and since Nvidia uses a full-blown, 4-wire PWM fan on this card, you can use a tool like RivaTuner to set it at practically any speed you want since the GPU is very cool running. I have mine spinning at around 700rpm and it is inaudiable.

That link you show points to an older revision of the AMD heatpipe cooler. The current revision holds an 80mm fan--http://www.heatsinkoutlet.com/AMD-B.htm. You could keep the stock 80mm fan and undervolt it if it's too loud, or swap it out for something like the Nexus 80mm.

At 12V, this will outperform the Alpine 64, which relies on thermal transfer across ...

I think you find the Yate Loon D12SL-12 a little too loud at 12V. This is not necessarily a fault of the fan design itself, but rather its 12V speed of 1350rpm. This fan, once slowed down to < 1000rpm, is one of the smoothest, quietest and vibration-free fans ever made. And Yes, I mean the Scythe S-...

In my weekend tinkering, I wanted to experiment with making the Antec Tri-Cool fans that you get with a P180 (and other cases I'm sure) into something a little quieter than the default speed on the "Low" setting. I agree, PC power consumption is disgusting. However, you could still run Vista with a different Window manager other than Aero.

Sort of like how you can switch XP to classic Win2000 mode, you can make Vista look like a dark-gray version of XP. This, I believe, runs in 2D mode.
