....aaand just got a BSOD saying "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" among other things while copying files.

I'm tempted to cut my losses and fork out for another drive but, without any guarantee that I won't have the same problem, I'm a little hesitant.

OK - done the low level format and the drive showed no errors in powermax. So I created my partitions again and formatted, started copying my MP3s back over and hey presto, the system hangs after a short while, the HD light stays lit and, although the mouse moves etc, anything that appears to involv...

OK, the fanless thing isn't working out - perhaps if I'd gone for the 120mm HS rather than the 92mm it could have worked but there you go. It only takes a very little airflow to keep things in check so it's no great problem.

Not dissimilar from how I set up my drives - only I go a bit wild with the partitioning! - not sure if it's necessary but I set up a windows-only boot partition, a scratch partition, a work files partition and a music & video 'play' partition. The idea of the scratch partition was that it would cut ...

Thanks for the advice. I'm actually using win2k which has served me well in the past but I'll try the same procedure. I've currently got a windows installation on an old PATA drive so I can set up the SATA drive to be the boot again and, if all goes wrong, I can just swap drives and all the s/w is t...

Speedfan showed the temps always in the 35 to 39 degree range so I don't think it's overheating. Noise was higher than the seagates but not notably ominous.

Do I Want To.....

Low-level format my HD using PowerMax? All data is backed up, or will be shortly. It's a Diamondmax10 and I've had a lot of trouble with files going corrupt (most notably windows components!). The store attributed this to the fact that I was using it as a boot disk on a PCI SATA controller which the...

CPU percentage is currently at 80% though it was at 100% and didn't make an impact on CnQ. Like I say - If it'll let me run without a fan, I'll probably stick with it the way it is - perhaps tweak it a little up as I'm sure the core temp can handle being a little higher than 39 degrees!

If you're planning an upgrade, I suggest simply replacing the fan on the HS with a quieter model in the interim and getting your Ninja or whatever at the same time as you get the rest - that way, you get the rather pleasing effect of more new stuff all arriving at once :D

Yep - PSU has a 120mm fan which the HS half overlaps and then the 120mm tri-cool on it's lowest setting. Currently, with f@h running, Speedfan sees nothing above 40 degrees. The core temp shows as 34 degrees. Couldn't tell you exactly what the ambient temp is but it is quite cool at the moment. The ...

OK, given that CnQ seems to be letting me go passive on a NH-U9 HS (browsing the web and manipulating a scanned image in photoshop, my core temp is at 33C) I think I'll live with the lower folding performance.

So thanks to all who replied in the last thread I have narrowed (after much deliberation and many headaches) a few pieces of hardware. As an afterthought, it may be a good thing that the HSF orientation worked out the way it did as this appears to be drawing cool air directly over the Nforce HS.

At some point this week, I'm going to try this thing fanless - will report back findings :D

Just to clarify, it is still letting the CPU ramp up when needed - just that f@h isn't making it do this.

folding with CnQ

Took me bloody ages to realise that the reason I've not noticed any folding performance increase in the move from XP2100 to Sempron 3200 is that Cool n Quiet seems to be capping the CPU at 1Ghz when I'm not doing much else. Anyone know if there's a way for F@H to appear on CnQ's radar, as it were? I...

it's not worth buying 2 x 512 MB and later on getting 2 x 1024 MB instead, that's just a waste of money. I'd rather be "bandwidth crippled" in a couple of months and then getting another stick.
