Re: CPU, cooling, and general advice for a new computer
I ended up building my system with the following changes/choices: 1. Intel Core i5-3450 2. Arctic Cooling Alpine 11 Pro 3. 2 Noctua NF-P14 FLX 140mm Fans (front is plugged into ULNA and motherboard header, back is plugged into both ULNA and LNA) 4. MSI GeForce GTX 550 TI Cyclone II OC (not installed...

Re: Noctua NF-P14 FLX low noise adapters
Thank you for your help. I was just afraid that I might damage the fans in some way. Plugging the fan into the motherboard with a LNA did wonders; the fan operates at ~500 RPM (UEFI) or ~400 RPM (in Windows 7) with the silent profile and my CPU and motherboard probes all report in the 30-40 degrees ...

Noctua NF-P14 FLX low noise adapters
I have tried searching and have been unable to find an answer. I bought some NF-P14s which come with a low noise adapter (UNA, black) and ultra low noise adapter (ULNA, blue). Even with the ULNA I find the fans louder than I was hoping. Is the ULNA meant to be or can I chain it with the LNA? Additio...

Re: CPU, cooling, and general advice for a new computer
I should have noted that the Core i5-2320 (95W TDP) is a Sandy Bridge and the Core i3-3225 (55W TDP) is an Ivy Bridge. I'm guessing the Arctic Cooling Alpine Pro 11 will still be good enough since kuzzia's AMD CPU is also rated at 95W TDP and built on 45 nm technology compared to the 32 nm of Sandy ...

CPU, cooling, and general advice for a new computer
First I should thank SPCR and the community for its help with two previous builds of mine from 5 and 6 years ago. I plan on building a new desktop and using my old one (1st generation Core 2 Duo Conroe) as a file server. I mainly surf the web, watch videos, and do some light gaming. Eventually I pla...

Looking for recommendations on 1 TB drives
I plan on buying a pair of 1 TB drives and placing them in software RAID (level 1) in Linux. Please note that I am only considering 1 TB drives, not 500 GB or 1.5 TB. These will be used for data and media storage only (no OS or programs) so performance isn't a big issue. I am mostly concerned with r...

WD Green drives as backup drives
I wasn't sure whether I should start a new thread. There's been a lot of talk about abnormally high park counts on Linux machines because of relatively frequent disk access by the kernel. I'm wondering if that would occur if the drives were mounted for data storage only. Basically, I envision a setu...

I bought my first NeoHE 430 last September and I bought a second earlier this month and both have been working fine. My first machine was a Core2 Duo with an Intel motherboard and my new one is a Sempron with an Asus motherboard. I've also used both Windows and Linux and I've never had trouble with ...

Sorry for the late reply. It really depends on the configuration of your motherboard. However, the location of the power connectors on your motherboard seem to be at the same location (or nearly so) so you should be ok. My 24 pin cable goes behind the motherboard and out through the opening near the...

Antec P182 PSU Mounting Question
Hi,
I just bought a P182 and NeoHE 430. I removed the PSU cage but it appears to be too small for the PSU. It looks the cage will be bent if I force it onto the PSU. Is this normal or is something wrong?
Thanks

Require Assistance with S-FLEX Fans
I just bought two Scythe S-FLEX 120 mm S-FLEX fans rated at 1200 RPM and two Zalman Fan Mate 2 for my SilverStone TJ-08 case. I changed the rear case fan to the S-FLEX, connected the 3-pin wire to the Fan Mate 2, then attached the Fan Mate 2 to the 3-pin motherboard connector. When I boot into Windo...

System Temperature Confirmation
Hi all, I have a Silverstone TJ08 with stock 120mm fans and a Core 2 Duo E6400 with stock cooler. None of the fans are undervolted. When I first built the system, I didn't place the CPU cooler properly and was getting temperatures in the low to high 80s. I took out the CPU cooler today and reinstall...

I installed Core Temp and Intel ThermalAnalysisTool and both report the temperature to be only 1 or 2 degrees less than the software I was using before, so I am getting accurate readings. I'm almost certain there was thermal paste on the cooler when I took it out so all I had to do was put the coole...

Core 2 Duo Heat Problems in a TJ08 Case
A few months back I posted asking for advice on building a new desktop. My final configuration ended up being the following: 1. SilverStone TJ08 with included fans 2. Antec NeoHE 380 3. Intel D946GZIS 4. Core 2 Duo E6400 with stock cooler 5. Western Digital Caviar 250GB 6. LG DVD-writer with Lightsc...
