well it would be silent, i can vouch for that as it's a passive cooler. The cooler uses a similar design to the HR-03, however doesn't have as many heatpipes or heatsink on the back. You would want to have decent airflow in your case methinks

Do not buy the powercolor 3870

The POwercolor HD3870 is a good card performance wise, but the cooler is a noisy little beast. So unless you want to replace the cooler, don't buy this card :)

Do you think it would work to use two thermalright HR-03 gt, one looping over the card and one hanging in front of it?

I think the card would be long enough that you would be able to do it without them clashing.

and that by far would be one of the best solutions

Shiki's PC silencing Guide (56k users sorry)

(note, in no way am i promoting cheap PSU's in this guide, it's just an intrest thing, could it be done, that sort of thing) Part One, The Power Supply NOTICE!! Power Supplies are very dangerous and should be handled with care at all times when not connected to power. To "decharge" the capacitors un...

it could be worth trying it out with a different PSU.. that one seems kinda low, if it is struggling, that may explain the problems you are experiencing.

Maybe try it out with a 500W seasonic..see how it goes :)

oh and

WELCOME TO SPCR!!

how dare you buy stock and then tell me about it?

ESP from HP...you could have at least bought from a local vendor so that the money stays in the country.

Glad to know it's quiet though, probably because it has a PII inside which you could cool with a passive HS these days

If you are so unsure about doing it, maybe it could be a good idea to wait a little before building, so you can learn a little more. Perhaps buy an old machine, take it apart and rebuild, and see if you can get it to work..

Exactly what Jackylman said

If you have ever heard (or not) a 120mm silent fan, ie NExus/nocturna/coolermaster/papst you will know that the "noise" is so small you won't be able to hear it anyway

so yeah, take his recommendations, i would go a zalman heatsink and fan on the viddeo card

the apogee is a great Water block, you won't have any troubles with it, in that line of thought, all swiftech products are very good and perform very well. If you are going to water cool the northbridge and the Video card as well, it could be a good idea to incorporate two of the swifty pumps. THat ...

These are my recommendations CPU E6400, great CPU, esp when overclocked Motherboard, An asus P5B Deluxe, rock solid with great overclocking RAM, 2gb Corsair, either 6400 or 8500 (if you can afford it for max overclocking) Video Card, an X1650 pro or XT, performs well in comparison with the 7600 and ...

it could be good to consider a lesser video card, and a better CPU, as you will see a bit of a bottle neck, especially with SLI (if you are going to use it) Upgrading to SLI is also a waste of time, by the time you want/need to upgrade, there are new cards out and a new version of your card is hard ...

Hard Drive, Samsung Spinpoint 250gb, quietest possible, stick it in a silencer

Video, or check out the X1950XT when it arrives, looks to be about on par with the 7600gt,

problem is, the cards will support vista, just not DX10

the 170, because it is a server chip, generally uses better silicon than the 4400+ and so has greater potential for overclocking, so that is the part i would recommend, along with one of the great steppings mentioned above :)
