Given how poorly the Rev 2 Ninja performs vs the original version used by SPCR (even with the bolt through kit), the recommended list of CPU coolers need to be revised as the Ninja rating is now highly misleading. Was there an obvious fault with the Rev 2 Ninja, like a highly convex base? :?

What if you leave the PSU so that it heats up a bit and the fan voltage is ramped up? Does the Scythe fan then start and keep running, even when the PSU has cooled enough to lower the voltage to its lowest point? Otherwise, you could just try one of the faster 80mm Scythe Kama fans (hard to tell wit...

Covering them with glue would only muffle the sound and violate the warranty I believe. Buying a new PSU would not be too Actually, the PSU noise in these cases is usually from coil whine which is caused by the coil windings vibrating. Why the vibrations are worse with low load is a bit of a myster...

Re: Picky requirements for heatsink - need help
I'd rather get a better aftermarket one so maybe I could push it to 3.2ghz. A decent HSF should easily let you reach that speed Artic Freezer Pro 7 - push pin The older non-Pro version has a backplate but this cooler is unlikely to cool much better than the stock HSF from the SPCR testing. http://w...

More thermal mass will slow down the heat up but will not decrease the stable temp unless it also increases the surface area exposed to the airflow.lucas82 wrote:Can it help with the temperatures, since the aluminium mass will increase?

If you block the side of the Ninja closest to the PSU and run a VERY slow fan in pull through mode to the rear of the case (use the fan for case extracting and duct to the Ninja - still with the PSU side blocked), then you should achieve your aim. This assumes that the PSU fan can run more slowly th...

Using the same motherboard (Gigabyte P965-DS3), I have not been able to undervolt my E6700 anywhere near my E4300 with the E4300 being fully stable at stock clocking (1.8GHz) with 0.99375V (bios setting) while my E6700 can only get down to 1.075V with its multiplier locked down to 6 (1.6 GHz)...

Could you retest with a midrange Core2Duo CPU like the E6550, just to give perspective on how this cooler copes with it's intended market, rather than with a high thermal load? It would be interesting to know if the Alpine 7 Pro can cool adequately at 5 and 7 volts for one of these loaded 100% by TAT.

I take the point that Orthos would not use all the CPU components that NeroVision would use. Surprising test for undervolting CPU stability
When I set up my system, I used Orthos to test stability with different vCores until I found what I thought was the lowest stable vCore with standard clocking for my system. I tested this with 16 hours of continuous Orthos small FFT tests to satisfy myself that the system was fully stable. I also we...

I'm just a bit worried that the heatsinks in the EarthWatts PSUs are fairly small so they may need a bit more airflow when the system is loaded. That said, you're right - your system shouldn't draw much so the PSU heat shouldn't be high. I'd still prefer a temp dependant variable speed fan as it cou...

I think the issue that bobkoure is referring to is that the CPU must detect that it is being loaded and then switch voltage and multiplier and this has a time lag before the CPU reaches full speed. For applications that constantly load the CPU, the speed won't be affacted but ones that load the CPU ...

The Samsung HDDs are well known for having very quiet seeks but quite a lot of vibration. Even a single one can cause a case to vibrate/hum noticably. Felger is spot on about suspension being the most common way to deal with this because it is cheap and effective. Gromments are usually too thin or h...

2000RPM is getting up into the industrial zone, competing with Rexus or Rexon or whatever that brand is. I'd try a 120mm PWM fan like the Artic Cooling as they can be set to run very slowly at low loads and yet ramp up if the CPU is heavily loaded. This gives you both quietness and flexibility. I use one of these fans with my SI-128/E4300 and when undervolted @ stock speed, the fan always runs at ~400r...
