Let's agree for now that SSD is a "specialist" product, no different than buying a specialist expansion card like a high end soundcard, audio-interface, video and RAID card et al. As jessekopelman said, there's no use complaining about the prices for those who are now interested in them when people...

My Windows directory is 25GB and Program Files X86 is 32GB (although 20 of those GB is steam). If I could use 80GB drive I would. Why not use a smallish SSD for your OS and those programs that really choke on i/o (visual studio is a prime candidate, IME) and use a standard HDD for all of your less ...

Maybe a couple of small holes at the base of the vent side of the HDD cage plate would improve the cooling of this case when large GPU cards (or other large cards) are installed. This would get rid of the stagnation zone at the lower end of the motherboard in this situation. Some grommets could be s...

Get a nice quiet DESKTOP drive, and think about suspending it so it doesn't resonate your case's panels. Pick out the right drive Well that's not really easy, is it? With your case, it's incredibly easy if you don't need to transport it around. All you need to do is unbolt the HDD cage and th...

If not needed i prefer not to undervolt, but it is an option when things will not work out. Unless you plan to overclock, why not undervolt? As ATWindsor pointed out, you can reduce the power consumption by significant amounts. Also, why are you running such high speed memory if you aren't overcloc...

I'm gonna say this psu might be worth $20 at most. And probably less. Bling plus completely junk electronics do not make for a spcr recommended item :) neither should half the psu's spcr has recommended that were severely loud and died on me in the past few years. Actually, the heat would never be totally dissipated by Black Body Radiation unless the GPU was perfectly insulated (sealed in a vacuum chamber with power and signals supplied/returned by electromagnetic radiation), no matter what the temperature. And if the radiating surface was large enough, it ne...

Sadly, the NSK4400 is light/flimsy and has buzzy plastic attachments compared to the (sadly discontinued) SLK3000B. Also, the 4400 HDD cage is mounted far from the front fan so no air flows from this over the cage plus the cage cannot be as easily suspended as with the SLK3000B. I was quite disappoi...

Re: Antec Three Hundred mini-review and dampening mods
my SLK3000B was cheaper and it came with a removable HDD cage and grommets. If one were so inclined, it wouldn’t be too hard to drill out the rivets for the inside HDD cage rail and move it away a little to allow some horizontal HDD suspension. With the SLK3000B, you can just turn the drive cage ...

a good observation. If you double your estimated load power requirements, your system will fall within the 20-100% margin of 80+ certification. IE: 150w load. (300w PSU) 80% effeciency range of 60-300w. 300w load. (600w PSU) 80% effeciency range of 120-600w. You assume that a system will run at clo...

Try dropping vCore first - my E6700 runs at stock speed down just below 1.2V and this makes it run very cool even at 100% TAT testing (core temps < 50 degC). BTW I'm using a TR SI-128 (orig version) and the PWM fan never goes above 500rpm unless I start overclocking (which requires the vCore to be r...

List of PSUs that SPCR chose not to review
I have seen in various posts that Mike has received several PSUs that SPCR has chosen not to review as they ddin't meet the basic minimal noise requirement. Is it possible for SPCR to list these PSUs? Then people will know if a PSU that has not been reviewed is either not worth considering (on the l...

far from being silent, with a pair of hard drives I got a peculiar 'beating' resonance that caused the door to vibrate in a cyclic hum. Leaving the door slightly ajar was the simple fix, permanent solution was a P182. :D I had the same beat resonance but the simple suspension mod I described earlie...

Yeah, I can't see why you would replace it. In fact I don't see why Antec dropped it as the Sonata (non-Solo type) cases aren't as good due to the stupid sideways HDD cage. :( The 3000B is probably the easiest case to mod for suspending up to 5 HDDs since you can just unbolt the cage and lay it on i...

The CM Elite 330 is a great little case if you run hot components as it can be set up to have a lot of airflow. Compared to the NSK3480, it has many more openings so it will not contain sounds as well and it is fairly flimsy in construction so it may resonate a lot more easily than the NSK3480. For ...

You could just add an inline resistor to lower the voltage across the fan. If you can find the current rating for the fan, just divide 4 by that and you will get the resistor value required. Eg fan rated at 0.25A => 4/0.25 = 16 Ohm resistor needed. You won't need to worry too much about the power ra...

The coasting with the engine business is taking way too many risks. What if something or someone bolts in front of you? Horses for courses. You drive a 3200 lb car while mine is considerably lighter. If I can brake hard enough to pulse the ABS and turn hard enough to cause tyre squeal, I don't cons...
