More efficient wall-warts
I'm in search of a new router and one thing I would like from it is for the power supply to not generate so much heat as to be almost too hot to touch. That seems like a real waste. I realise that these things are built down to a price, but do any manufacturers use better power supplies? I'm looking...

I ended up getting an Asus nvidia-based board (M2npv-vm) as I could be pretty sure it would work. I have sound and 3D video working nicely in Kubuntu. I guess Debian may take more work. The AMD cooler on my X2 4600+ is fairly quiet. I can hear it running under the desk, but it's not obtrusive. I wou...

In the end I went for the NSK4400 case. This was partly so I could use my old DVD and partly to just have more space in the case to make working in their easier. I went with the Asus MS with an X2 4600+ and 2x1GB. I have to say I'm impressed by the connectivity of this MB. If you can get hold of the...

The first computer I owned was a BBC Micro when I was about 15. I got the lower spec model A as it was 100UKP cheaper than the B. I later upgraded the memory from 16k to 32k. I had loads of fun with that. Played games, including Elite, and wrote lots of programs with the very good Basic it had. All ...

I need at least some 3d support, if only for 3d desktop effects. I'd love everything to be free, but I'm still dependent on binary things like Realplayer and Flash. I'm aware that there are projects to implement these in open source. The Nouveau project is trying to write open drivers for nvidia car...

Most of the hazzle are produced by wireless components. Why don't you buy a Dell Linux-System or ask your salesman to assemble a 100% compatible Linux-computer? In my case I don't need wifi on my home PC. Dell Linux systems are not an option in the UK and I prefer to build myself. I think the main ...

ADO parts (Brisbane & Windsor EE) have same TDP as C2D,generally the same price as older ADA parts. I'm considering a 4600+ for it's reasonable price/performance and, as you say, the ADO and ADA parts are around the same price. This being so, why would anyone want the ADA? There's a glitch on Amazo...

I'm thinking of building something very similar to this. I'm looking at using either a 4600+ or 4800+ CPU with that Asus MB. I've heard that it's fairly fussy about what memory it will use. What did you use? I used this Patriot stick: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220088 ...

Jumper, I'm thinking of building something very similar to this. I'm looking at using either a 4600+ or 4800+ CPU with that Asus MB. I've heard that it's fairly fussy about what memory it will use. What did you use? Is the AMD fan reasonably quiet? I can manage without total silence. It's got to be ...
