Re: Cleaning TRUE?
Thanks for all the contributions! In the end I gave the TRUE a blast from a can of compressed air I had lying around. That would have worked in isolation. Sadly, adding two new WD20EZRXs showed the power supply was dying. So I have decided to retire this rig entirely. Seven years ain't bad. I shall ...

Cleaning TRUE?
Recently opened my P182 for the first time in several years. Dirty doesn't begin to describe the fans! But there was a good deal of cruft on the fan side of the TRUE cooler, as well. Google seems to think that cleaning the TRUE has never been discussed in this forum. So three questions: 1. Has anyon...

Re: Impactics C3LH-B experience
Thanks guys! Since I am not given to encoding video (and I have no ambitions to become the next Spielberg) I think I shall go with this one. I know it's rather lazy of me to buy a ready made solution rather than build it myself, but the longer I have been retired the less free-time I seem to have. G...

Re: Impactics C3LH-B experience
My ambient has a ceiling of about 32. After that I turn on the air-conditioning in the bedroom next to my study. This morning the ambient was 26. My current idle is about 13/14 over ambient. That's with the CPU fan spinning about 760. I ran a long (90 minute) development batch of AftershotPro2 this ...

Impactics C3LH-B experience
Has anyone any experience of this case? I am thinking about buying a fanless i7 system from At Last! . My main use at the moment is photographic editing and development, large spreadsheets, and small database projects. I anticipate at some time running eclipse for some java development. I don't game...

Well now: flemeister wrote:Concave surface of fan blade is the exhaust side, convex surface is intake. Simple. :) I like this one. It would be one weird blade if the concave side was not leading. Thanks all
In addition to a more powerful folding rig, I clearly need to get myself some new spectacles. I cannot see the engravings on either the old S-Flex or the Slipstream.

Fan rotation direction
This will undoubtedly sound like a n00b question, but I can't google the answer from the forums - well, not in the first 30 results ... Is there a systematic way of knowing which way a fan will blow? Yesterday I had to take down a machine to switch out a dead dvd-writer, and took advantage of the ha...

Have you tried processor affinity?
 Since you are using some form of unix, Cordis, and running the wine smp client as well as the gpu, have you tried to bind the gpu instance of wine to one processor, and the smp ones to the remainder? I had wanted to get to 1m before we left Amsterdam, but it just didn't happen, and then we had nearly two years with only a 56K dial up link - and even that only worked on wet Wednesdays after muck spreading; so the folding had to stop until mid August. I shall have to stop again for a few hours som...

SMP on 64-bit UNIX?
Now that the summer is on the way out - the noon temperature here in Northern Italy is a mere 26c  - , I am thinking about setting my wife's computer to folding as well. At night, we need the heat! When we lived in Amsterdam, this E2160 used to be worth ~1200 ppd. But something cordis said in ...

Dont forget the passkey!
One thing I forgot to mention, but you may already know, Cordis, is that you have to take a passkey. When I was previously folding, up to late 2008 when I left ADSL-land, this was given out as being unnecessary; but you won't get your bonuses unless you have a passkey.

Have you tried wine?
I recently found a thread on foldingforum which shows you can run the Windows SMP client with -bigadv under wine. I have been running the Windows SMP with wine 1.2 and 1.3.1 in Mandriva 2010.1 (32 bit) for just over a week, and it is very stable. Others are using this client with freeBSD and openSus...

Size of GPU result sets?
Aristide How big are the result sets for the GPU client? I am thinking about attempting to run the GPU client under wine, because the linux SMP WUs are too much like hard work. Only one in five WUs is suitable for my current kernel, and the uploads (26 Mbytes on a 56Kbit line :-(() are impossible. T...

Not financial but time costs ...
I have been away from folding for a few months - I moved from Amsterdam to North West Italy. In addition, since I upgraded to the 2.6.27 kernel, fah bombs out ...

No killawatt = No statistics
Aristide
I haven't been able to find a source for a killawatt here in The Netherlands, so I can't answer ATM. Perhaps one of the native Dutch speakers who are following this thread could point me in the right direction?
But 62c still sounds high ... is that with a stock cooler?

If you haven't yet decided ....
I can recommend the Gigabyte-P35-DS4, which you can get for around GBP 100 including VAT (some of these price comparison sites seem to mix and match VAT inclusive and VAT exclusive). Aristide We too are having a short period of warm weather (the Dutch call it "summer"), and the peak temps for my E6750 reached 52 centigrade. What I mean is this: We know from the history of Latin that there were two distinct forms of the language. The learned Latin is still understood by those of us who had to learn to read it at school. You did not include the S-Flex fans in this shoot-out. Would you like to comment on the reasons for this? According to Scythe specifications, they are quieter, RPM for RPM, as the winning Slipstream models - 20.1dB vs 24dB for the 1200 rpm variants.

If you install the linux SMP, you would do so inside the VM. It would not interfere with, nor be interfered with by, the Windows GUI client.
