Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
[quote="Taxcheat"]FWIW, I stumbled upon this NAS build that had quiet, lots of drives, and ECC ram as goals. Other than the $370 mobo/CPU combo, seems like you could go with most of the rest of the SPCR components. http://www.nerdblog.com/2009/04/good-enough-zfs-nas.html" onclick="window.open(this.h...

Re: AK-CB002 PWM splitter doesn't work
Make sure you setup SpeedFan correctly. Configure->Advanced->set drop down box to correct chip->PWM mode to Software controlled. Of course, the Akasa splitter only works if you're actually using PWM, since it draws power from molex. Otherwise, you'll be better off getting a regular fan splitter, if ...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
So, what makes ECC so important that you need it in a home server, but not your desktop computer? BTW, my original question still stands, what's the secret sauce that makes AV-GP drives special? What other differences apart from disabled head parking and error correction is there from regular old Gr...

I don't see what the fuss is about having user details on the right. I mean, SPCR doesn't have avatars anyway, and user names are double listed on the left, just above the post anyway.

No, but it's generally a bad idea to take down a service when lots of people are using it, if something goes wrong.Monkeh16 wrote:Having a selection of styles isn't going to increase server load.

Re: Graphics Card for new build in FT02 case
Pretty much the same. I also have a 92mm fan wedged between my speaker and monitor cables at the back blowing in fresh air. I actually added the 92mm fan after reading one of your posts I believe, but I found having the fan as an intake resulted in better temperatures compared to having it as an exh...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
So what exactly are the repercussions of not having ECC? I mean, majority of regular computer systems don't have ECC, why should a file server? Maybe ECC memory is cheap in the US, but in Australia ECC RAM seems to run about 30-50% more expensive, before factoring in MB/chipset compatibility, and li...

Yeah, just go and try stopping the fan manually, one by one. Personally, I just use my finger, but I guess a pencil/eraser works too. =]

Re: Best GPU cooler + 4-pin fan
SPCR has reviewed the GELID Icy Vision . From looks of things though, the fans have a 4-pin header, but aren't PWM fans. Arctic have other GPU coolers , you might want to take a look. You might want to take a look at the Twin Turbo or the Twin Turbo Pro. AC coolers come with PWM (4 pin) fans, AFAIK....

Re: Graphics Card for new build in FT02 case
I can't say anything about noise, but I'd guess the AC would cool better than the GELID. Just a quick look shows that it is much bigger, fitting three 92mm fans as opposed to two. Of course, an extra fan means extra noise, depending on fan speeds. I have an AC Accelero S1 on my 5870, and while idlin...

Re: Silent Home Server Build Guide
I'd like to know if there is a major difference between the AV-GP drives and regular old Caviar Green Power drives? A quick look around shows that, at least in Australia, AV-GP drives sell for ~50-70% more than normal WD Green drives. Is it just head parking?

As per thread linked by corrion, contact Antec support. I had the new P183 with CPU backplate hole as well, and my front panel also had electrical noise issues. Antec sent me a front panel module for free, and it has a blue semicircle sticker on the side, and no noise issues.

What's the PSU inside the NSK3480? I can't say for certain, but from my experience, most PSU's are pretty much the same in terms of fan swaps. Pop off the screws, take out the fan, it's a straight swap. The only issue you might have are fan headers, since the PSU might use a smaller, two pin header....

Best to quote MikeC in the other thread asking about P183, in comparison to the R3: The difference between these cases seems relatively subtle when you haven't had them side by side. But when you've built systems in both, it's pretty clear. The Fractal gives you lots of the right features for a very...
